What is the appeal of the Polaroid photograph? The more you think about it, the more it becomes obvious that its appeal derives from what you could call its aura: We treasure these photographs not for what they are, but for what we make of them.

Just a small point of black-and-white technique in passing: this shot is an excellent example of what's called a "tonal merger." If you look carefully, you can see that the cat in fact has an intact left ear.
