Ralph Eugene Meatyard's death in 1972, a week away from his 47th birthday, came at the height of the "photo boom", a period of growth and ferment in photography in the United States which paralleled the political and social upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s. It was a time of ambition, not reflection, a time for writing resumés, not thoughtful and inclusive histories; in the contest of reputation, dying in 1972 meant leaving the race early.

When did you first know that you wanted to be a photographer? I liked taking photos in high school so my step-father Flip Schulke, who was a professional photojournalist, suggested I go to photo school at RIT in New York.

While in Europe a couple months ago for the Rencontres d'Arles festival I found quite a few interesting items and as I look over them I see my tastes have drawn me to almost as many non-photobooks as photo-related ones.

Horst Paul Albert Bohrmann (August 14, 1906 – November 18, 1999) who chose to be known as Horst P. Horst was a German-Americanfashion photographer. Horst is best known for his photographs of women and fashion, but is also recognized for his photographs of interior architecture, still lifes, especially ones including plants, and environmental portraits.

Victor Cobo is the contemporary version of Baudelaire’s nineteenth century flâneur who roamed the streets of Paris following his intrigue. Cobo is specifically in pursuit of the seedier side of life though, much like what we see in Toulouse Lautrec and Edgar Degas’ works (especially in the latter artists brothel monotypes).

Italian photographer Ettore Moni just self-published his book Suburbia, a series of black and white urban landscapes, taken in the European cities of Genoa and Bilbao, which aim to raise some questions about the shape of those cities, the idea of space lying behind them, the role and freedom of space left for us human beings inside them.
