According a report published by ABI Research in 2011, the mobile health market is currently worth around £77million with 44million health apps downloaded last year. There have been a number of new innovative pharma apps released in the course of 2011. In partnership with the US National Kidney Foundation, Pfizer, a real social media heavyweight in the industry, launched Manage CVD Risk in Reduced GFR app, designed for healthcare professionals to reduce the risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). In 2011, IBGStar by Sanofi has become the first monitoring system for blood glucose that has been cleared by the FDA which directly connects to Apple’s iPod touch and iPhone available in Germany, France, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Italy. Also released last year was MyAsthmaLog the NHS’s Android app designed to assist young people and children with asthma self-management by allowing them to construct an individual asthma plan and keep track of appointments and asthma attacks. Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (NYSE: BMY) announced a donation of $6.9 million in 2011 to support the HealthWell Foundation, an independent non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to eligible individuals to cover coinsurance, copayments, healthcare premiums and deductibles for certain treatments. The donation was made to HealthWell's co-pay assistance funds to help underinsured cancer patients with their out-of-pocket disease related expenses that are not covered by their insurance plans, regardless of treatment selected.
In addition to its support of cancer patients, Bristol-Myers Squibb has a number of patient assistance programs in place in other disease areas for eligible patients. In 2011, the company helped more than 200,000 patients with free Bristol-Myers Squibb prescription medications estimated at more than $400 million through donations to the Bristol-Myers Squibb Patient Assistance Foundation as well as other programs.
