RELIER. TRANSFORMER. | Scoop.it

French people are quite conscious of what they need or should do to stay healthy.

Interesting is how they value their own awareness of health risks, like: tabacco: about 90% think they are well-informed

and effects of alcohol on health (88% wel informed).

They think that public messages about prevention of health are sufficient in number (74%) and do attract attention (70%)!

how would this survey come out in the other EU countries?

"We don't want to miss the train of digital health" is a phrase Bertalan Mesko, MD, PhD, has heard many times since he started working with pharmaceutical companies. Well, I have good news, says Mesko. They cannot miss it, because there are no trains to catch anymore. Instead, we should be looking to futuristic spaceships. If the pharma industry doesn't deal with disruptive technologies, it won't have an industry at all.

It might sound like a bold statement, but major trends suggest a future in which medical innovations come from a garage or a small startup company. For hundreds of years, innovation belonged to the R&D departments of pharma companies. A few technological developments might change that forever – and we are not happy about it.Bertalan Mesko, MD, PhD

Denise Silber commented:

"Complex question indeed that you raise about the transformation of pharma. So far, pharma has mostly missed out on the opportunities to 1) communicate in an engaging way on social media 2) to be involved in mobile apps that are used in a significant way 3) to transform their relationship and the sales process toward healthcare professionals 4) to transform internal processes in general. So, that's a poor scorecard indeed.

"However, if we look at, for example, Silicon Valley start-up accomplishments in health, there have been hiccups as well.

--Companies without pharma/device experience such as 23&Me and now Theranos turned out to have made premature announcements, probably to satisfy investors, and then faced setbacks.

--Healthcare connected objects and apps, even when not suffering from restrictive pharma marketing policies, confront high abandonment rates and seem to have difficulties in demonstrating clinical value.

"For the moment, even monster Google seems to want to partner with pharma rather than go it alone, (although this can change once Google has learned how everyone works from the inside).

"Wouldn't it be fair to say that new, disruptive ideas have always started with individuals or tiny teams. Many pharma compounds were the work of external researchers that were licensed or brought in.

And pharma is now taking a close look at start-ups and finding ways to collaborate with them as they would have with academic researchers in the past."

A good example of pharma collaborated with start-ups is Bayer's Grants4Apps™ program, which invites health app developers to submit their innovative app ideas for novel software that contributes to improving health outcomes. For more on that, see: http://bit.ly/pgtourberlin2013

Modern medicine has brought huge health benefits. Now researchers want to go further.

To avoid antibiotic resistance undoing a century’s worth of progress, researchers are racing to restock the antibacterial armoury. Others are exploiting the data generated by ubiquitous computers and smartphones to better anticipate outbreaks of infectious disease.

With the potential for gain so great, the prevention of illness is playing an ever-larger part in medicine. Intervention to protect people from long-term disease could begin in the first moments after birth. And although a decline in health in later life might seem normal, there is ongoing debate about where healthy ageing ends and disease begins.

Work to exert greater control over rogue immune systems, as well as to develop technological solutions to paralysis, is showing initial promise. The advent of CRISPR–Cas genome editing has raised hopes for widespread use of gene therapy; meanwhile, this technology is also aiding the search for new drugs. As long as barriers to accessing the best treatments available can be negotiated away, the future of medicine could be very bright indeed.

Silicon Valley and Digital Therapeutics Vow to Go Beyond the Pill. But Is It Worth the Price? #hcsmeufr #esante

Silicon Valley and Digital Therapeutics Vow to Go Beyond the Pill. But Is It Worth the Price? #hcsmeufr #esante | E-SANTÉ : COMPRENDRE. RELIER. TRANSFORMER. | Scoop.it

What if an app could replace a pill? That’s the big question behind an emerging trend known as “digital therapeutics.” The idea: software that can improve a person’s health as much as a drug can, but without the same cost and side-effects.

Digital therapeutics, or “digiceuticals,” as some call them, have become a Holy Grail in some quarters of Silicon Valley, where investors see the chance to deliver medicine through your smartphone. Andreessen Horowitz, the venture firm, even predicts digital drugs will become “the third phase” of medicine, meaning the successor to the chemical and protein drugs we have now, but without the billion-dollar cost of bringing one to market.

About a dozen startups now call themselves digital therapeutics providers, and say they’re distinct from the rest of the digital health market of activity monitors, smart scales, and sleep trackers.

To distinguish themselves from “wellness” gadgets, digital therapeutics companies tend to carry out clinical tests and sometimes seek regulatory approvals –one company, Welldoc, offers a prescription-only version of its BlueStar phone app for managing diabetes, which it terms the “first FDA-cleared mobile prescription therapy.” But unlike drugs, digital therapeutics don’t usually need approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, since often they promote lifestyle or dietary changes that are deemed to be low-risk.

Whether a digital therapeutic involves a tracking sensor or coaching though an app, the biggest question is whether they provide a distinct, measureable medical benefit. One startup calling itself a digital therapeutics company is Virta Health, based in San Francisco. The company raised $37 million in March. Its goal is to actually “reverse” diabetes without drugs or surgery using online coaching to get people on a special diet high in fats and low on carbs. It has a study by Indiana State University to back up the claim—about half of the 262 people with type 2 diabetes enrolled in a 10-week trial were able to reduce their blood glucose levels to non-diabetic ranges.

Some digital companies are already allying with pharmaceutical makers. One, Propeller Health, inked a deal with GlaxoSmithKline for what it calls a “digitally guided therapy” platform (read “GSK #pharma Propels Ahead by Targeting COPD Adherence with IoT Inhaler”; http://sco.lt/8vnt8z). The approach combines Glaxo’s asthma medications with sensors, made by Propeller, that patients attach to their inhalers to monitor when they’re used. Patients who get feedback from Propeller’s app end up using the medication less often.

Some drug company executives remain skeptical. Robert Plenge, vice president at Merck’s research labs, had to look up “digital therapeutics” when asked whether they were important. “I don’t totally understand what you mean,” he says. “Which might in and of itself be your answer.” Plenge doesn’t think the idea would have much impact on drug development and questioned whether digital companies will be able to prove their offerings are worth the price.
