Welcome to the website of the Fourth International Conference on Degrowth for Ecological Sustainability and Social Equity. The conference will take place in the German city of Leipzig from September 2-6, 2014.
The plains of eastern Colombia are a tough land—the haunt of drug trafficking, guerilla warfare, and paramilitary groups; a place where the soil is so poor everyone said nothing could grow. Paolo Lugari, the founder of the 200-person community of Gaviotas, believed otherwise. In the face of adversity, he built a thriving, self-sustaining community.
What can we learn from observing the self-sustaining ecosystems of the natural world? And with that knowledge, how can we design systems of our own, systems of all kinds, that mimic the intrinsic balance of ecosystems, with their capacity for diversity, renewal, and the transformation of waste into energy?
Seven years ago, there was no way to find organizations from all over the world working on social justice and environmental change; the Wiser.org network changed that by bringing online the largest, editable global directory of not-for-profits that allows people from all over the world to share the incredible work happening around them.
The global conversation for sustainability in manufacturing is shifting to the “circular economy”, like at Davos, where the Ellen MacArthur Foundation has promoted the concept and the opportunities for companies in this field. Up until now, the focus of the circular economy has been primarily on design products for easier disassembling and recycling – the outer circle – which implies creating a closed loop of materials and in the case of electronics, recovering metals in our gadgets.
NEW YORK, Nov. 6, 2013 -- /PRNewswire/ -- Communications is a seemingly constant state of evolution—but often the focus of change is on external communications, public relations and marketing efforts. Internal communications is being impacted by technology at the same rapid pace.
Imagine what you might do if you could print your own solar panels. That's kind of the dream behind Shawn Frayne and Alex Hornstein's Solar Pocket Factory -- although they see it more as the "microbrewery" of panel production rather than a tool for everyone's garage. With over $70,000 of backing from a successful Kickstarter campaign, the inventors are now working on refining the prototype. If all goes well, by April they'll have a machine that can spit out a micro solar panel every few seconds. In the meantime, Frayne stopped by Flora Lichtman's backyard with a few pieces of the prototype to explain how the mini-factory will work.
The Guardian website noted that the promise of business-model innovation has long captivated the sustainability field, generating plenty of hype. But all the talk has yet to yield many real business-model changes.
Christina Marule owns a spaza shop — the equivalent of a corner store — in rural South Africa. Five years ago she was forced to keep her young son out of school while she traveled to the nearest market, a half day's trip away, to purchase products to sell in her store. Today, she manages inventory via text message from a mobile device. Her son is back in the classroom.
We’re collectively insane. Our civilisations now appears to be almost psychotic. We’ve created systems that if you were to look at them as if they were individuals, we would see them as being mentally ill to an extreme extent.

Decentralised energy: Historically, this has been less of a priority for us. Where we had explored renewables, the results had usually come back showing that demand reduction (energy efficiency initiatives) would be more effective at cutting carbon and controlling costs for occupiers – so this was where we’d focused. However, in the light of some of the insights the crowd gave us, we’re now revisiting feasibility studies for local off-grid energy generation, as a means of reducing reliance on grid electricity and minimising the risk of supply security. We were also interested by the crowd’s suggestions regarding innovative supply arrangements for off-grid generation and supply.
