• Hull city council has joined forces with a cryptocurrency developer to launch a bitcoin spinoff designed solely for use in the city. HullCoin is being "mined" by the council, and will be awarded as a reward for voluntary work, as well as given out by food banks with aid packages. The aim is to spark the creation of a local economy, similar in scope to the Brixton Pound in south London.

About a year and a half ago I gave a talk in London titled “The future of Bitcoin and rebuilding the financial system”. Although there were only about a hundred or so people in the room, that talk went on to be watched nearly 36,000 times online. Huge numbers of people have been inspired by how Satoshi planned years ahead; how he didn’t stop at merely moving money around, but went on to imagine astonishing new capabilities …. and plant the seeds of their implementation in the Bitcoin protocol.

Josh Wise, the car’s driver, qualified for the Aaron’s 499 race in Talladega but needed the money for the sponsorship. The Dogecoin community reached out to Wise and raised more than $55,000 to pay for the doge-wrapped car. Like many people, Wise had never heard of the cryptocurrency — instead, the Doge community found him.

I still believe that Bitcoin is a good idea, despite some flaws in the original implementation that are coming to light, which make it less than ideal for use as a general purpose currency.

The poll then described Bitcoin to respondents as “a new online digital currency that is not connected to any particular country’s currency system and is not controlled by any government.” Then, even despite the high number who knows nothing about Bitcoin, a plurality (47 percent) said government should not allow people to use Bitcoins to purchase goods and services, while 38 percent said it should be allowed and another 14 percent don’t know.

Imagine traveling back to your parents' or grandparents' young adult years and telling them that in the near future, marijuana would be legal for recreational or medical use in nearly half of the U.S., and that pot smokers would have the option of buying it with a virtual marijuana-themed currency in lieu of traditional money.
