I love receiving gifts in the form of new insights! It doesn't matter if others received the same gift years ago and I am just getting it now. If it is new to me, I get excited. It is like waking up in the morning and discovering a new room in your house. I read an article by Thomas Friedman in the New York Times this weekend titled, "And Now for a Bit of Good News." The subject of the article was the new "sharing economy," think Uber, Lyft, Airbnb, etc. In the article, Friedman calls Airbnb a "Trust Platform." To me, this weekend, this term was a gift. He is so right.

You can make a case either way. On the one hand, apps like Airpnp, which launched in New Orleans last year, now have listings for hundreds of toilets around the world. Presumably, they could be useful if you're stuck in a crowd (say, at a street festival) and other options, like public bathrooms, aren't available. On the other hand, Airbnb for toilets? It sounds like a joke just writing it down.

Parking can stir intense passions, especially in San Francisco, where demand for public spaces often exceeds supply. Hence the outcry over apps that let occupants of slots on streets make money by alerting other drivers that they are about to drive away.

As the hype of Alibaba’s IPO continues to soar, let’s not forget Tencent and its ubiquitous mobile app, WeChat that threatens Alibaba’s future growth in mobile. Even in it’s F-1 filing, Alibaba admits that its ability to adapt to the rapidly evolving mobile commerce trend is a significant risk factor. Alibaba is genuinely concerned over Tencent’s dominant position in mobile, especially its key weapon of WeChat.

Josh Gibbs normally wouldn’t leave his apartment in Northeast Washington, D.C., pick up a loaded pizza from a restaurant in Chinatown, bike to a complete stranger’s apartment, drop off the pizza and leave without any cash exchanging hands. But last week, he did just that. And truth be told, he kind of loved it.

Venture investor Chris Dixon of Andreessen Horowitz and others say they are concerned that the increasing use of mobile apps means less investment in the open web, and that this could have a negative effect on innovation. But is that true?

Some work projects are too big to tackle alone. But it's not always easy to make sure every member of your team is on the same page. When deadlines are looming, you'll need to work together on a plan, share notes, meet remotely and collaboratively edit files and documents. You'll also need a way to assign tasks and track your colleagues' and employees' progress. That's where your smartphone or tablet comes in. With the right apps, there are dozens of ways to work together — even when you're far apart. Read on for eight apps that will help you and your team share, collaborate and get things done.

Much has already been said about the wisdom of paying $19 billion for a company that has no obvious or reliable source of revenue (it’s more than a number of companies listed on the S&P 500 that actually make things that are sold for a profit). I’m more interested in what it says about the nature of techinnovation in America.

To some extent, this activity is the other side of yesterday's. In Managing food shopping can help cash-strapped families we were give advice on how to save on our shopping list. Today we are going to find out about a new app which is aiming to help people in New York make better use of the world's resources by letting users pass on their uneaten food.

From time to time I'll have some guest posts this summer. I'm very pleased to have Jen Carey kick things off. She's been a fabulous colleague for EdTechTeacher, and an amazing live blogger at our events, and she'll be speaking at the EdTechTeacher Summit in Chicago in July. Here are her thoughts on why her school recently adopted Google Apps for Education.

Smart Citizen, in short, has created a tool that advances towards an intelligent city model, seeking to connect citizens with their urban environment in an optimal manner. Barcelona, as a mobile capital, has been the city chosen by Tomás Diez's team to implement the initial phase of the project, the starting point for the creation of a global Smart community. This is also why this summer Barcelona will host the 10th Fab Labs world congress, Fab 10, co-organized by Institut de Arquitectura Avançada de Catalunya (IAAC), FabLab Barcelona, Barcelona City Council, MIT and the Fab Lab Foundation.

If you've ever tried to make a tough decision with a group of people online, then you've most likely done one of two things. You may have had a discussion over email, in which case the conversation has gotten very messy and it becomes difficult to suss out exactly where everyone stands. Or, you could have tried a poll, which doesn't give the opportunity for re-working proposals based on feedback.

Omlet, a new privacy-based social media platform launching today at SXSW, has an idea. They call it the "privacy economy." It's a notion that could really only be incubated in Silicon Valley's minor league, but it emerges from deep within the American capitalist psyche: find a problem, then make some money off of it. But, should we really be thinking of a human right as some sort of economy to be exploited for profit?

Facebook is preparing to put down $19 billion to acquire WhatsApp. However, the bulk of that total is comprised of common and restricted stock. To be precise, $15 billion will be equity. Beyond the fact that Facebook only has $11.5 billion in cash right now and couldn't afford an all-cash deal, there's some information in how Facebook decided to structure the deal.
