Security, dignity, civic/legal/moral equality, justice, education, love, fun…all these are common-sense, plain language values that almost every sane person shares. This is where any thought about the politico-economic arrangements of society, especially the “commons”, should begin. We should build up from these in the simplest and most direct fashion possible. And perhaps with as little theory and philosophy as possible.

The robot he presented at the Summit is Tapster, a robot for automating physical testing of mobile applications on a mobile device. It can simulate a human finger on a touchscreen and movement to bridge the gap between manual and automated testing and will continue to improve to imitate gestures, pinching, double-tapping, and swiping, as well.

The whale, the jungle, and the turtle. Soloman Hykes is hoping the whale metaphor for his company’s open source software project, Docker, doesn’t turn out to be a fail whale. Hykes and his 18-person company dotCloud are attempting to build a computer the size of the entire Internet, which is really an oversimplification of what the Docker project is attempting to do. Wired.com has the full story on the project, which aims "to foster a world where anyone can treat any pool of machines in much the same way Google treats its private data centers." Writer Cade Metz does a wonderful job of telling the story behind dotCloud and Docker, weaving together the whale on Hykes’ T-shirt, the jungle-like environment Hykes works in, and even the dotCloud turtle (yes, a real life turtle named Gordon). Moreover, it is argued that these trends could be used in different phases of product lifecycle; by involving user in maintenance, repair, upgrade and reuse. In order to promote user involvement, information regarding all these phases has to be created and shared with the society.”

We did it. We did it just in the nick of time. We produced and delivered the hardware and software for 500 e-paper badges which were the hit of the summit. Flooding in Shen Zhen, where our Seeed Studio partners are located, delayed parcel pickup and nearly scuttled the whole affair. Frantic calls and emails on both sides of the Pacific only managed to confuse the situation. When seven of the eight boxes arrived in Washington DC we had them held for pickup and were greatly relieved to actually get the stinking badges in hand

I’m just back from the Open Hardware Summit 2013 that happened last Friday September 6 at the MIT in Boston, MA. I had a great time, met new friends and came back full of inspiration and motivation. The open hardware movement is build by amazing people, I’m very grateful to be a part of it.

The Chinese shanzhai phenomenon was featured recently in posts by Andrew “Bunnie” Huang and Tom Igoe. To me it’s striking reminiscent of the flexible manufacturing networks of Emilia-Romagna and the Third Italy.
