Why a provisional university

It is an act of imagination. To try and imagine the university we might actually want. But it is also something that can be thought about and performed through a process of questioning and doing. Through that process a provisional university can begin to emerge. What would it mean to act as if the university we wanted already existed? What would it mean to research as if we didn’t have to follow the laws of publish or perish, output and impact factors? What would it mean to teach in a way which was directly related to the world we live in, the conflicts we’re wrapped up in and the hopes we harbour? What would it mean to learn without assessment in a community where equal intelligence was the point of departure?

e teach our students: We say that we have some theories about science. Science is about hypothetico-deductive methods; we have observations, we have data, data require organizing into theories. So then we have theories. These theories are suggested or produced from the data somehow, then checked in terms of the data. Then time passes, we have more data, theories evolve, we throw away a theory, and we find another theory that’s better, a better understanding of the data, and so on and so forth.
