CubieTruck metal case (named CT-MC for short) designed by cubieteam is a new case for the open source hardware CubieBoard3. It has very strong and overbearing appearance, very simple and reasonable structure, and also with solid and high-grade materials. It is all ready for sale by now, looks like picture …
As many of you are well aware by now, Atmel can be found at the very heart of most Arduino boards on the market today. Evident by the sheer volume of DIY projects surfacing on sites such as Instruc...
Recently announced, this book by Alicia Gibb aims at giving you a more clear idea of what does it mean to create an open source hardware company, product or project.
Article from Tcat Houser editor-in-chief of TRCBNews.com. You might not have noticed that the $35 computer, Raspberry Pi has exceeded 1 million units shipped.
Free and open source software are no good without open hardware. If we can't install our software on a piece of hardware, it's not good for anything. Truly open hardware is fully-programmable and replicable.
While there are plenty of examples of people making a business of open source software, there are fewer models for successful open source hardware companies.
In a previous post about how to make money using open-source hardware, I mentioned that one way to generate income was to do consulting projects using commonly used platforms like Arduino. Open-source hardware products like Arduino can be seen as “not professional” or “for hobbyists projects only”, but it is more and more used in many professional projects, as the huge number of Kickstarter projects around open-source ideas can attest. In this article, you will learn why it is actually beneficial for a consulting business to use open-source hardware.
Now don’t laugh. I see what you’re about to say: this project looks like a mess. But trust me when I tell you this thing could be slapped to your face sooner than later, provided you prefer not to trust Google with your location, photo, and activity data and provided you’re a lover of open source hardware.
The whole do-it-yourself (DIY), open source maker electronics scene that’s really gained in popularity over the past few years has led to a lot of really interesting devices and kits appearing on the market.
Last month I attended the third Open Hardware Summit in New York City. With the growth of the community and the emergence of products that target people beyond core open source hardware enthusiasts, there was a great deal of discussion about what it really means to be open source hardware and also how to be both open source and competitive in the hardware world. This post expands upon something that I only had time to briefly touch upon during my presentation.

The Open Source Hardware Enterprise is a brand-new Enterprise at Michigan Technological University dedicated to the development, advancement, and availability of open-source hardware. Being a new Enterprise, we are lacking in funds to get our projects off the ground. Unlike open-source software, hardware development is costly. Our dream is to open a "makerspace" here on the Michigan Tech campus where students, faculty, and potentially community members have access to open-source prototyping and manufacturing equipment. Open Source Hardware's low-cost rapid-prototyping services support many other Enterprises. Please help us continue to help each other by donating to our cause. A neat example of our work can be found on the International Business Ventures Enterprise page. One of our very first print jobs was the body for their infant heart annunciator, printed in purple PLA plastic. For more details about our work, see below.
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. What can baby robots tell us about ourselves? Mysteries of human cognition, like the mechanisms of curiosity or the origins of languages, are starting to be unveiled through experiments with robots that can learn by themselves. Pierre-Yves Oudeyer, research director and laureate of the prestigious European Research Council (ERC) program, introduces the Poppy open-source 3D printed humanoid robot made at Inria, allowing every lab, school or FabLab to join this open science exploration.
Recently the group that I work with on pipe organs was able to add a rather unusual example to our collection: an early, self-contained theater organ, which would have been installed in the orchestra pit. Properly, this is a "pit organ."

Before he lost his arm serving as a Marine in Iraq in 2005, Jonathan Kuniholm was pursuing a PhD in biomedical engineering. Now as a founder and president of the Open Prosthetics Project Kuniholm is working to make advanced, inexpensive prosthetics available to amputees around the globe through the creation and sharing of open source hardware designs.
Shawn Frayne and Alex Hornstein, two young inventors based in the Philippines, are taking their passion for clean free energy and developing a way to make it accessible and cheap for everyone. These guys are working restlessly to provide a product that could be used by practically anyone to make homemade solar panels.
