Excerpted from Part Six of ‘Super-Smart Democracies: Dissolving Neoliberalism, Elitism and Managerialism’. Just as Copernicus dethroned the Earth from the centre of the Universe, so we now need to dethrone the debt-money system and the power of the plutocrats from the centre of our democratic universe. Without a democratic paradigm that is centred on the …

"Grant Township had seen what happens when people nationwide take to the streets to protest bullying corporations: Arrests. Lots of them. So Grant Township planned ahead. Two weeks ago, it passed a law that protects its residents from arrest if they protest Pennsylvania General Energy Company’s (PGE) creation of an injection well. Residents believe this law is the first in the United States to legalize nonviolent civil disobedience against toxic wastewater injection wells. Township Supervisor Stacy Long said. “We’re doing it to safeguard the residents and protect as many people as possible,” she said. Long said legalizing direct action is a response to the ongoing problem of rural residents seeing their voices excluded from discussions between state governments and big corporations on issues that have local ramifications."

It started with an email many months ago about protesting the fact that what the people want has no influence in legislation, while money very much does. If we could get 1000 people willing to risk arrest for a protest of this sad state of affairs, then let’s do it! We got well over 1000 within 2 weeks, and 3000, ultimately.

A new historical vista is opening before us in this time of change. Capitalism as a system has spawned deepening economic crisis alongside its bought-and-paid for political establishment. Neither serves the needs of our society. Whether it is secure, well-paid and meaningful jobs or a sustainable relationship with the natural environment that we depend on, our society is not delivering the results people need and deserve. We do not have the lives we want and our children’s future is threatened because of social conditions that can and should be changed. One key cause for this intolerable state of affairs is the lack of genuine democracy in our economy as well as in our politics. One key solution is thus the institution of genuine economic democracy as the basis for a genuine political democracy as well. That means transforming the workplace in our society as we propose in what follows.

The term post-democracy was coined by Warwick University political scientist Colin Crouch in 2000 in his book Coping with Post-Democracy. It designates states that are conducted by fully operating democratic systems ( elections are being held, governments fall and there is freedom of speech), but whose application is progressively limited.

The material on ancient democracy in India is not easy for a non-specialist to work with. My own interpretation of the evidence and its significance can be found in Democracy in Ancient India. However, the reader may want to check this essay against the ancient sources and other modern interpretations.
