Last month I attended the third Open Hardware Summit in New York City. With the growth of the community and the emergence of products that target people beyond core open source hardware enthusiasts, there was a great deal of discussion about what it really means to be open source hardware and also how to be both open source and competitive in the hardware world. This post expands upon something that I only had time to briefly touch upon during my presentation.

It’s no secret that an opposition to sustainable living exists. Earlier this year, Texas state brought several SWAT teams to a sustainable community and threatened to shut it down. Each one of the community members were initially handcuffed at gunpoint. It was called “The Garden of Eden Community,” and was totally self sustainable. You can read more about that here.

San Francisco's board of supervisors voted to officially legalize Airbnb in the city after wrangling over details and amendments for two years. The 7-4 vote approving the law is the culmination of a hard fight by Airbnb and president of the board of supervisors David Chiu, who led the push for the law. The final version of the law represents a lot of compromise on the part of the city and Airbnb, aptly shown by the many proposed amendments, some of which did not make it into the final form of the bill.

There once was a time when vegetable gardening and backyard farming were not endangered; these activities were a way of life. However, with booming big agriculture business comes the need for monetary and job security, which means that threatening the productivity of big agriculture will not be tolerated. With Michigan’s recent ban on backyard farming, along with many states regulating the amount of garden space individuals may have in their yard, the ability for Americans to grow their own food and feed themselves is becoming a thing of the past. The future of personal gardening and farming is in danger and may become illegal altogether.

Old economy vs. new economy is a meme that goes back decades, but it's bursting back into prominence as governments, regulators, and entrenched industry groups take on a range of digital disruptors in the name of competitive fairness, consumer protection, and tax collection. A German court's ruling this week banning two of Uber's digitally based car-sharing services in the country is but the latest, most overt example.
