This week, stalwarts of the Occupy Democracy campaign in Britain are continuing to stand their ground in Parliament Square. The heavy-handed police crackdown and evictions may have scuppered much of the plans for peaceful and creative demonstrations, but the re-emergence of the Occupy movement is a welcome sight in an increasingly unequal, stressed and disaffected city of London.

#occupydemocracy protesters have called on supporters of democracy to join them as they re-occupy Parliament Square from 6pm this Friday at 6pm (21 November) for a long weekend. [1] In advance of the re-occupation, many #occupydemocracy supporters will be in attendance at the 24-hour Big NHS Sleepout / Vigil in the Square, which starts on Thursday at 7pm. [2]

From last Tuesday, Parliament Square was wrapped in wire mesh. In one of the more surreal scenes in recent British political history, officers with trained German shepherds stand sentinel each day, at calculated distances across the lawn, surrounded by a giant box of fences, three metres high – all to ensure that no citizen enters to illegally practice democracy. Yet few major news outlets feel this is much of a story.
