Jay Rogers aims for the company he co-founded to build at a Knoxville microfactory an attractive, electric-powered vehicle designed for staff at the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Laboratory to get around campus.
Local Motors was on hand at the Detroit Auto Show to announce the opening of two new “micro-factories” and to show off their 3D printed car, the Strati.
A development plan for a research, development and manufacturing facility in West Knox County is headed to the Metropolitan Planning Commission on Thursday.
Earlier on this month at the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) in Chicago, Arizona-based automobile manufacturer Local shown it's Strati 3dprinter car for the first time.
Meet Jay Rogers. His company, Local Motors, promises to produce collaboratively designed cars at microfactories. Is this the future of auto manufacturing?
This past week, open source car manufacturer, Local Motors, 3D printed a car and drove it live in front of audiences at the IMTS trade show in Chicago.
The Local Motors Phoenix micro-factory has been looking for other options to create a nice finish on smaller metal products like the LM keychains. Typically achieved by grinding the metal surfaces manually, Corey Renner, mechatronics engineer, is designing and building a tumbler using cost-effective materials to make the finishing process more convenient and efficient. Check out his plan in this video.
CHICAGO—When Jay Rogers left the U.S. Marine Corps in 2004, he made a promise to his fallen soldier friends that he would go out into the world and make a difference. Speaking at the LinuxCon conference here, Rogers detailed how he has delivered on that promise with Local Motors, a startup that is set to enable a new era of automobiles.
In conjunction with Local Motors, GE also partnered with the company Quirky. Of the partnership,CNET notes, “GE provided Quirky with a collection of patents to develop its library and in turn, Quirky puts a GE logo on whatever inventions make it to market from that shared patent cache. The earliest products from the duo — a plastic carton that lets you know if your eggs have gone bad.”
When it comes to 3D printing there are few, if any, companies that are making as big of a splash, at least from a media standpoint, as Phoenix, Arizona-based Local Motors. The company that surprised us all...
If you live in the Mid-Atlantic region, you should soon be able to buy a 3D-printed car -- or at least see one made. Developers at National Harbor -- a 350-acre waterfront property in Prince George's County, Maryland -- announced their plans earlier this month to open a facility for Local Motors by year's end. The facility, which is expected to be approximately 40,000 square feet, will include a 3D printing microfactory, lab, and showroom.
Local Motors, which specializes in advanced manufacturing, gained MPC approval Thursday for a proposed “micro-factory” off Pellissippi Parkway in West Knox County.
Earlier this year, Autodesk announced plans to introduce Spark, a new open platform for 3D printing, aimed at making it simpler and more reliable to print 3D models and easier to control how that model is printed. Now, Autodesk is collaborating with Local Motors, the leader in open-source hardware innovation, to utilize the Spark platform as Local Motors continues to develop the Strati, the world’s first 3D printed car.
As we see a progression within the additive manufacturing space, it’s only natural that boundaries will be pushed and broken, while new innovative uses for the technology emerge. What may be a breakthrough today, could be commonplace tomorrow. The industry is incredibly exciting to watch as visionaries expand the usefulness of 3D printing to areas we could never have even imagined only a few short years ago.
