In an apparent effort to reassure the world's pedestrians that its self-driving cars – should they ever take to the road – will be among the safest vehicles around, Google is planning to equip them with external airbags.

(Source)We’re flawed organisms, barreling around at high speeds in vessels covered in glass, metal, distraction, and death. This is one of Google’s "moonshots" -- to remove human error from a job which, for the past hundred years, has been entirely human.

After attending the 1964 World’s Fair, the science-fiction author Isaac Asimov wrote an essay in The New York Times imagining a visit to the World’s Fair 50 years in the future, in 2014. Among his predictions: “Much effort will be put into the designing of vehicles with ‘robot-brains’—vehicles that can be set for particular destinations and that will then proceed there without interference by the slow reflexes of a human driver.”

The driverless car by Google is an amazing machine. In our past posts we have mentioned that it can pick and drop a passenger from anywhere. One can impose destination limitation and can prevent its misuse. Google has not stopped here and is thinking of introducing even more amazing features in it. Another interesting thing that the robotic chauffeur can do is its ability to perform self diagnosis when any wear and tear occurs in any of its part. Not only this, when there will be less fuel left in the fuel tank, it will have the capability to drive to the nearest gas station on its own.

This won't hurt a bit. (Google) Most cars have airbags that are designed to protect passengers in a crash, but Googles driverless cars may go a step further, with airbags designed to protect nearby pedestrians.

The car itself will be perfectly safe, but, the human factor, such as pedestrians no paying attention to the car or "standard driven cars" have to be considered. Hence the need of airbags outside the car !
