Being known as the ‘Robin Hood of banks’ and being searched for by the Spanish government for taking out funds of Spanish banks worth more than €500.000, which, allegedly, he donated to grassroots movements, he could not attend the conference in person. “I Will be online […]” Enric Duran tweeted three days before the conference, and he was. The MoneyLab audience gazed onto the white walls before which Duran stood out, projected on the screen via Skype, speaking about the role of money and liquidity in grassroots movements. Skype technology appeared to be once again extremely vulnerable to interference; some minutes of his talk had to be spent eliminating sources of noise.

The Society of the Spectacle has these things to give us a show about two people who have faced the banking system and the status quo staging it as another episode in the war between different television audiences. Therefore, experts in public must have argued that what interests the masses are the stories of “bank robbers” proud of their mess, beyond the real causes of their actions. And especially they must have concluded that it would be juicy the fact that one of them, myself, be a “fugitive” of the Spanish justice.

Being underground is not a condition Enric Duran always takes literally, but one night in late January he went from basement to basement. At a hackerspace under a tiny library just south of Paris, he met a group of activists from across France and then traveled with them by bus and Métro to another meeting place, in an old palace on the north end of the city. On the ground floor it felt like an art gallery, with white walls and sensitive acoustics, but the basement below was like a cave, full of costumes and scientific instruments and exposed masonry. There, Duran arranged chairs in a circle for the dozen or so people who'd made the journey. As they were settling in and discussing which language they'd speak, a woman from upstairs, attending an event about open licenses, peeked in through the doorway. She pointed Duran out to her friend, trying, barely, to contain herself. After the meeting was over, she came right up to him. "You're the bank robber!" she said.

The machine is stuttering and the engineers are in panic. They are wondering if perhaps they do not understand it as well as they imagined. They are wondering whether they are controlling it at all or whether, perhaps, it is controlling them.— The Dark Mountain Manifesto

One of the pillars of the dominating troika system in the European Union is the threat that, for any country that leaves the euro system, they will find their substitute currency devalued, thus affecting the savings of the middle classes in those counties. Those middle classes typically being the ones who sway the vote in elections and therefore decide which political parties which are going to govern.

The Catalan Integral Cooperative (CIC, pronounced “seek”) is surely one of the more audacious commons-based innovations to have emerged in the past five years. It is notable for providing a legal and financial superstructure that is helping to support a wide variety of smaller self-organized commons. Some of us are calling this proto-form an “omni-commons,” inspired by the example of the Omni Commons in Oakland.
