Science knows what people need in their lives to be happy, so why don't our economies support these needs? Can we create a world where everybody has enough?

Something very powerful feels to me like it is starting to move. I see it in the victory of Syriza in Greece on a platform of localisation, resilience building and sustainability as an antidote to austerity. I see it in the explosion of craft breweries, farmers markets, community energy companies and so on, in Scotland's moratorium on gas fracking. I also saw it in the two days I just spent in Belgium supporting the great work of the regional Transition hub “Wallonia-Brussels” there. The trip was also to support the Belgian release of the French language version of The Power of Just Doing Stuff (“Ils Changent le Monde”).

Take changes to the public and private sectors together and you’ll see that new government measures will reduce total employment considerably. Family budgets will shrink and so will demand and business earnings. Nevertheless, corporations will benefit because of the large cut in labour costs and the constant rise in productivity that permits further staff reductions.

Today the success stories of AirBnB, BlaBlaCar, Lyft, and others are already well known. The rise of these initiatives is just one side of the sharing economy. In many neighborhoods, peer-initiatives are flourishing. Something new is happening - the rise of active citizenship, people identifying themselves with their neighborhood, working on social cohesion - a renaissance of neighborhoods and bringing people together who believe in each other. At least this is happening in the Belgian city Ghent where local initiatives received a big window: a very successful sharefest took place this September.

Via David Bollier: (go to the original article for many interesting links) “Interest in the commons in Belgium is much stronger than I had imagined. At an environmental symposium in Brussels on Friday, the organizers of “The Commons: (Co)managing Commonly Owned Resources,” had to turn away people at the door. It was standing room only …

For the first time in history, people all over the world can connect with each other and produce common value: a universal encyclopedia (Wikipedia), an operation system (Linux) or the design of a mother board (Arduino). They are building complex systems outside traditional organizations such as companies, government institutions or NGO’s. In addition, they don’t do it for the money, but because they like to do it, because they want to make themselves useful, because they want to solve a problem… Therefore, we are dealing with a new (proto-) mode of production, peer production. It is a hyper productive mode of production because it is based on passionate production and therefore, it has the tendency to outperform traditional businesses. In this chapter, Michel Bauwens places P2P within a historical framework and explains this new form of collaboration, sharing en producing.

The economy of FLOSS (Free and open source software) has been the subject of numerous studies and publications, particularly on the issue of business models. However, there are fewer studies on the local networks of FLOSS providers. This research focuses on the ecosystem of Belgian FLOSS providers and, more specifically, their geographical distribution, the activities, technologies and software they support, their business models, their economic performance and the relationships between companies.
