The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) is the second largest university in Africa with more than 180,000 students. The OER project at NOUN was initially motivated in response to the 2012 UNESCO/Commonwealth of Learning Paris Declaration on OER. Specifically, NOUN referred to the section that encouraged government-funded materials to be released under an open licence and made available and accessible as OER.

Take the University of Texas at Arlington, which has a full-time Open Education Librarian, Michelle Reed. One project she led this year involved creating a series of videos promoting “Textbook Heroes,”professors who have replaced commercial textbooks in their courses with OER. The first of the videos includes several short interviews with students complaining about the high cost of commercial textbooks and expressing their wish that their professors would try open resources instead. One student in the first video in the series said he has skipped buying some assigned textbooks because they were too expensive. “Sometimes there’s no option,” he said. “If you don’t have the money for it then you don’t have the money for it. And it kind of hinders everything.”

The University of South Africa (UNISA) is a mega open and distance learning (ODL) university with more than 400,000 students in South Africa and around the world. UNISA committed to the implementation of OER within the university by incorporating support for OER into all relevant policies and processes. This is seen as the critical enabling factor. Moreover, as an open university, it was felt OER are well aligned with the institution's academic traditions of sharing knowledge while being beneficial to learners.

In a series of insightful descriptions, Contact North | Contact Nord Research Associate Rory McGreal highlights the expanding and diverse applications of OER in post-secondary institutions around the world.
The thirteen examples provide insights into multiple facets of OER development, use and impact:
Use of OER for teaching and learning;
Integration of OER into programs and courses;
Development of OER by individual faculty, as well as teams;
Adaption of OER to match culture, language, and course content requirements;
Strategies to involve faculty in the development and use of OER;
Benefits of OER for student learning and faculty effectiveness; and
Organizational change resulting from the integration of OER.
The descriptions outline the organizational contexts that motivated the introduction of OER into teaching and learning, as well as details of the policies, practices, development processes, and resources involved. Benefits and challenges for faculty, students and, in some examples, institutions receive particular attention, followed by consideration of the potential of OER in each academic situation.

Once we had identified some clear areas within the network (e.g. MOOCs, OER, etc) we gathered together some key references within these. The choice was not always the most cited but rather trying to provide a range of coverage and type of publication. There is also a timeline view you can use to explore by topic and year.
We’ve produced a 32 page Beginner’s Guide that covers these main areas, with an overview of the area, and summaries of some key papers. We hope this will be useful to GO-GN and other researchers in the Open Education space. Feel free to share widely and please let us have any feedback on it.

How to make open educational resources sustainable
Open educational resources (OER) have undeniable benefits – they allow educators to use affordable (mostly free) learning resources, they can be easily updated or customised according to their purpose, they make education more accessible to a wider group of learners and allow for creativity in course design. The low or no cost aspect of OER is often mentioned as one of their biggest assets. Although OER are mostly free to use, this does not mean they are free to produce and maintain, which often raises the issue of their sustainability.
Sustainability issues in OER refer to when the funding used to cover the initial costs is not sustainable in the long term. For the most part, OER initiatives receive one-off seed capital, which most often comes from the government, EU programmes or philanthropy. The question of sustainability appears when the funding stops and OER organisations need to continue their activities. Additionally, OER creators face the challenge of maintaining their initial momentum and preserving the high quality of their OER in the long run.
