-Awareness of OER has grown in recent years, with some institutions throwing their full support behind such materials for their ability to drive down college costs for students. In the new report, Achieving the Dream argued that using OER can also lead to the development of innovative teaching strategies centered on equity and inclusion. The report calls these methods open educational practices, or OEP.
Researchers identified five common characteristics associated with this type of education:
1- Student agency or ownership over courses. 2- Inclusive content tailored to students' backgrounds. 3- Student collaboration on new theories or content that can be used in future assignments. 4- Assignments meant to boost critical consciousness, which involves developing students' ability to identify and address power imbalances. 5- Classroom culture that fosters respect between students and instructors.

The year 2020 shone a light on many issues in our sector. Amongst these was the challenge of equitable access to research and learning resources. The benefits of open access are blindingly obvious in the context of a global pandemic, where timely and universal sharing of research findings is critical in the race to find solutions. A challenge for 2021 must be to build on this knowledge, and improve access to all our publicly-funded research. Open access advocates such as the Australasian Open Access Strategy Group (AOASG) work to highlight the path to open access publishing amongst researchers, policymakers and funders. We already have the infrastructure to make research FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), and this is an opportunity to acknowledge the Australian university open access research repositories that are enabling this change.

Starting today, all new Canadian Medical Association Journal content is now freely available online, with older material becoming available on March 1, 2020. Previously, CMAJ research articles, editorials and news stories were freely available, and other content including commentaries and practice articles were only fully available after one year. Dr. Andreas Laupacis, editor-in-chief of the journal, says providing immediate free access to content will make the journal more relevant to discussions about improving Canada’s healthcare system. “Some of the material in CMAJ that is useful to public discussion around important issues with our healthcare system were only available to CMA members and I think they are of broader interest to members of the public, patients and policymakers,” he says.
