There are two reasons why we might want asynchronous testing. The first, and obvious reason is that node.js is asynchronous, and therefore our tests should be. The second reason is to make tests which target I/O run much faster, by running them concurrently.

A simple in-process key/value document store for node.js. nStore uses a safe append-only data format for quick inserts, updates, and deletes. Also a index of all documents and their exact location on the disk is stored in in memory for fast reads of any document. This append-only file format means that you can do online backups of the datastore using simple tools like rsync. The file is always in a consistent state.

This is an intro tutorial on using node.js, coffeescript and mongodb to build a simple blog. It builds off the concept in a tutorial I first used to learn node.js more than a year ago, but with a completely from scratch approach. In this tutorial I will also cover practicing Behavior Driven Development using Mocha.

Few days ago I was working on a fairly typical web application and I faced the challenge of implementing a fairly typical web application feature – file uploads. It was the first time I was implementing file uploads with Node (and Express) and I did what anyone else would do – I googled it.

As a developer, you should be able to write load tests and get informative reports without having to learn another framework. You should be able to build by example and selectively use the parts of a tool that fit your task. Being a library means that you can use as much or as little of nodeload as makes sense, and you can create load tests with the power of a full programming language. For example, if you need to execute some function at a given rate, just use the 'nodeload/loop' module, and write the rest yourself.

In 2009 Node.js took Javascript out of the browser and turned it into a general purpose programming language, it wasnt the first (or likely the last) to do so but if you are using JavaScript outside the browser now chances are it is with Node.js. This is how I first got started with Node.js, and why I think its impact goes beyond arguing about spaghetti callbacks. Sometime around August 2010 I wanted to write an image sharing website, I forgot what existed at the time and why I didn’t want to use it, but it was an excuse to play with the new HTML5 Drag and Drop API which was a good enough reason for me. I knew the server would be very simple, it just needed to save images and serve static webpages, I usually would have gone with a plain CouchDB App (CouchApp) which is perfectly suited for this job however I had been hearing a lot about Node.js so I figured I would try.

Back when I first started playing with node.js, there was one thing that always made me uncomfortable. Embarrassingly, I'm talking about module.exports. I say embarrassingly because it's such a fundamental part of node.js and it's quite simple. In fact, looking back, I have no idea what my hang up was...I just remember being fuzzy on it. Assuming I'm not the only one who's had to take a second, and third, look at it before it finally started sinking in, I thought I could do a little write up.
