The core of our new project runs on Node.js. With Node you can write very fast JavaScript programs serverside. It's pretty easy to install Node, code your program, and run it. But how do you make it run nicely in the background like a true server?

I have decided to write a simple PaaS (Platform as a Service), in order to demonstrate the capabilities of my perfectapi API framework for Node.js. I don’t want to compete with other PaaS offerings – this is just a need that my company has – to demonstrate how to simply and easily self-host and scale services developed with perfectapi.

This is more of a simple demo at the moment, but it proves a few points. 1) Node is seriously awesome (and easy to get up and running) 2) Socket.io is equally awesome 3) It's easy to support the iPhone and other touch devices 4) Canvas is cool too

I’m involved with a project where our ruby/rails developer dropped out, so I decided to take on the job using node.js (rather than learn rails). We initially were using services from dotCloud, but it was too flakey from day to day and our demo was coming up. For hosting, Amazon’s EC2 was the obvious candidate, but I’d have to setup and provision the entire server from scratch.

Ranvier is a Node.js based MUD engine built for modularity, extensibility and getting up-and-running in the least amount of time possible. Full localization support. Mob/item/room scripting right in Javascript, no more terrible DSL. And most importantly, thorough documentation.

Everyone knows that NodeJS can be used to make über fast webservers. But did you know that it's good for low level tasks too? In this article we'll write a joystick driver for Linux. Technically it's not that low level, the kernel is handling the hard bits for us, but the results are still very cool.

One issue that we have had with Node.js projects is how to allow our developers to assume the role of devops for the various different sites a machine may be running – i.e. to restart node sites without incurring a large overhead in server configuration.
