"Harmony, Unity & Love" Mural Proposed In #NewtownPA Township

At the January meeting of the board of supervisors, Executive Board, NAACP Bucks County member, Barbara Simmons proposed bringing the county’s latest community-based mural project to Newtown Township, Middletown Township and Newtown Borough.

Through the creation of community-created and inspired murals, the project seeks to bring groups together in an effort to break down barriers, to be inclusive rather than exclusive, to learn about each other and to embrace each other.

Similar mural projects have taken place in nearby Morrisville, Falls, Bristol Township and Bensalem. One is also planned in Doylestown.

“What we would like to do in Newtown. is use the highly-visible pedestrian bridge that connects George School and Newtown Borough above the Newtown Bypass (between Buck Road and South State Street),” Simons told the board of supervisors. “This would be a great place to have a unique mural that would use the chain link fence to display the artwork,” she said.

johnmacknewtown's insight:

Ms. Simmons invited me to work with her and a mural artist to come up with a design for the mural that will be submitted to the Newtown BOS for approval as part of the process.

Back in early 2024, Barbara Simmons – former Executive Director of the Peace Center – and I discussed my idea of initiating a “Love is Love” mural project in Newtown (see Meet Mack Monday 26 February 2024). Ms. Simmons worked with several communities and police departments in Bucks County such as Quakertown, Morrisville, Falls Township, Bristol Township to bring police and community members together to gain understanding and improve relationships through mural arts projects.

When I asked if Barbara was still interested in a mural project in the Newtown area she said: “The short answer is ABSOLUTELY!! I want to involve George School, CRN, BCCC students as well as 3 different police departments. I now have a local mural artist.”
