Opioid Funds For Police Surveillance Truck?

The preliminary agenda for the 25 November 2025 Newtown Board of Supervisors (BOS) public meeting, included a motion to use opioid settlement funds to help pay for a police “surveillance truck.”

Some residents questioned whether this use aligns with the funds’ intended purpose—prevention, treatment, and recovery. Concerns included transparency, whether the purchase actually addresses opioid harm, and the need to prioritize community-based services.

Supporters argued the vehicle could help investigate drug-related activity, while critics said it diverts money away from direct public-health needs.

johnmacknewtown's insight:

At the last minute, the item was removed from the agenda. The BOS Chair - Elen Snyder - said it this would be reconsidered in January 2026 when Mr. Mack and Mr. Fisher, both of whom had issues with this idea, will no longer be on the Board. The two newbies are likely to follow the lead of Ms. Snyder who will probably again place the item in the infamous "Consent Agenda" to discourage discussion and comments regarding this inappropriate use of Opioid Settlement funds.
