After six years of discussions and court battles, Newtown Township supervisors approved the Arcadia Green development Wednesday night on a 20-acre site near the intersection of the Newtown Bypass and Buck Road.
How traffic will flow around the 60-home development and other neighboring communities remains to be seen (read “Controversy Regarding U-Turn Bypass Access Option for the Proposed Arcadia Newtown Development”; http://sco.lt/6Xy2oy). The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation still must issue a Highway Occupancy Permit for the project.
Township officials, the developer and representatives of nearby housing associations plan to meet with PennDOT experts in early September to discuss how best to alleviate safety issues and traffic congestion at the busy intersection. The date and time of the meeting has not been finalized.
UPDATE from Peter Ancona,VP-Newtown Crossing Community Association: it looks like Thursday, September 9th is the date that works best for the largest number of the group that will participate.
But, by court order, the supervisors had to approve the land development by the end of August, or risk losing input into the plan.
The supervisors voted 4-1 for the housing development. Supervisor Kyle Davis voted against the plan, saying he wanted to see the traffic issues resolved first.
Attorney John VanLuvanee, who represented the developer, told the supervisors that if they didn't meet the Bucks County Court-ordered stipulation to allow the development to proceed by Tuesday, the township could face sanctions for costly delays in the construction project.
