A pro-Palestinian organization in Scotland has clinched a landmark victory in a UK court that ruled in favor of its members, who were accused of racism for having participated in a protest against Israel three years ago.
.
Glasgow Sherriff’s Court announced on Friday its verdict in favor of two members of the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign (SPSC), which supports Palestinian issues in Britain.
The members of SPSC Mick Napier and Jim Watson had been facing charges of racism and aggravated trespass for a protest against an Israeli firm in September 2014.
The two were arrested in a shopping center back then when they refused to leave the demonstration, which was held against Israeli company Jericho cosmetics that operates in the occupied West Bank and had been involved in Israel’s 2014 military offensive against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
Napier said they “were accused of being motivated by hatred of Israelis rather than opposition to Israel’s repeated massacres, apartheid across the whole of Palestine and genocidal violence in Gaza.”
The prosecutor in Scotland claimed that the two were recycling an ancient anti-Semitic “Jewish blood libel” by speaking about Israel’s murdering of Palestinians.
Napier said these claims were being made in support of the Israeli regime, while the people of Gaza “were still looking for ice-cream freezers and vegetable refrigerators in which to store the bodies of children killed by Israel’s military.”
“When the Scottish government joined in by denouncing the ‘deep inhumanity’ of the Israeli massacre,” Napier said, the Scottish procurators were “working hand in glove with pro-Israel lobby groups to silence voices of Palestine solidarity.”
The SPSC has been under pressure from pro-Israel lobbyists and Scottish prosecutors who were trying to criminalize their actions in support of Palestinians.
Last year, two employees of the pro-Israel Community Security Trust made allegations against SPSC members but that was also thrown out by a court.
Mais que devient #Obama à part appeler #Macron ?Il travaille dans les retours d'ascenseurs #Finance #corruption
NY Mag - 25.04.2017
One of the many perks of being a former president is that publishing houses will pay you millions of dollars to write (or hire someone to write) your memoirs, while corporations will happily hand you great gobs of money to talk into a microphone for an hour.
And if you happen to be the singularly charismatic, globally beloved, first former black president, that publishing contract will be a record $65 million; that speaking fee will be a whopping $400,000; and Richard Branson will even let you onto his boat.
But then, if you are Barack Obama, the world’s most powerful spokesman for pragmatic, center-left governance, should you collect on all your prizes? More specifically, at a time when populists the world over are seeking to tar liberal technocrats as the bought-and-paid-for puppets of special interests, should Obama have risked tainting his creed by accepting nearly twice his presidential pension to speak at a Wall Street firm’s conference this fall?
[A] crucial vulnerability of center-left politics around the world is that their sincere conviction — a faith in the positive-sum nature of cosmopolitan values and appropriately regulated forms of global capitalism, tempered by a welfare state — is easily mistaken for corruption…This approach has a lot of political and substantive merits. But it is invariably subject to the objection: really?
Did you really avoid breaking up the big banks because you thought it would undermine financial stability, or were you on the take? Did you really think a fracking ban would be bad for the environment, or were you on the take? One man’s sophisticated and pragmatic approach to public policy can be the other man’s grab bag of corrupt opportunism.
Leaders who sincerely care about the fate of the progressive center as a nationally and globally viable political movement need to push back against this perception by behaving with a higher degree of personal integrity than their rivals — not by accepting the logic that what’s good for the goose is good for the gander.
This makes sense. Although, it is worth noting that there are significant differences between Obama racking up Wall Street speaking fees in 2017 and Hillary Clinton doing the same three years earlier. Obama is not going to create a huge unnecessary liability for his 2020 campaign by accepting $400,000 from Cantor Fitzgerald. And it’s harder to read the financial firm’s investment in Obama as a down payment for access to a future White House, given that he, unlike Clinton in 2014, appears to have little interest in resuming formal public service.
But still, Obama does not need this gig. And both his party — and his ideological kin the world over — could really use some distance from Wall Street, given that even the center-left’s own technocrats now recognize that the financial industry is an overgrown parasite whose rapacious rent-seeking immiserates working people.

“I really believe that we should have and still should take out his airfields and prevent him from being able to use them to bomb innocent people and drop sarin gas on them.”
Those were Hillary Clinton’s words just hours before her nemesis, President Donald Trump, ordered air strikes launching 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at the Shayrat airfield in the southeast of Homs, Syria.

Similar reports have been coming from other media outlets. The Daily Telegraph reported from the Samood neighborhood that an airstrike apparently targeting a single IS fighter had killed a dozen civilians instead, according to witnesses.
“The planes waited until one of the Daesh walked out into the street and then they struck. The fighter was only injured, but 11 members of one family in the house next door were instantly killed,” a resident named Hashem Abdullah told the British newspaper.
“They dropped leaflets over the city telling us not to worry about the strikes, saying that they were extremely precise and would not hurt the civilians,” said Yusuf Ahmed, who lost his brother and his young family to a coalition airstrike. “Now it feels like the coalition is killing more people than [Islamic State],” he said..." The UN fears up to 800 thousand civilians are still trapped in the ISIS-held part of Mosul, where the anti-terror operation is now raging. A similar situation was seen in neighbouring Syria a couple of months ago. Back then though, the UN raised concerns over the fate of a hundred thousand people in Eastern Aleppo, as Syrian forces tried to retake it from Al-Nusra terrorists. RT's Ilya Petrenko compares the battles for the two cities.

(...)Thanks to camera phones and social media, the deadly consequences of U.S. military operations are indeed being recorded, shared, and watched around the world on an unprecedented scale. But while civilian deaths are regularly reported in local media outlets in the Middle East, they are seldom reported in detail by international media. (..)
(..) Foreign Policy recently reported that the U.S. military will no longer confirm which nation is responsibility for civilian deaths caused by coalition airstrikes. Centcom began taking responsibility for civilian casualties from its strikes in 2015 (though with numbers far lower than those given by outside reports). Its allies, however, including France, the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Australia, have pressured Centcom to stop specifying which country carried out which strike. This move will likely make the air campaign in Iraq and Syria more resistant to public scrutiny, making it even harder for civilians to obtain recognition or recompense for harm.(..)

The #media is ignoring leaked #US -government documents on #Syria - The New Arab - 06.02.17
Comment: Disclosures reported by the media about US policy in Syria were quickly forgotten, and have been written out of the West's dominant narrative of the conflict, writes Ian Sinclair.
"...In summary, the leaked information wholly contradicts the popular picture of western benevolent intentions let down by President Obama's ineffective leadership and inaction.
Instead the evidence shows the US has been sending an "extraordinary amount" of weapons to the armed insurgents in Syria in the full knowledge that Salafists, the Muslim Brotherhood, and al-Qaeda in Iraq were the "major forces" driving the insurgency. They did this understanding that sending in weapons would escalate the fighting and not "end well for Syrians".
Furthermore, the US has long known that its regional ally Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states have been supporting extremists in Syria. And, most shocking of all if true, both Kerry and the DIA report seem to show the US allowed forerunners to IS to expand and threaten the Syrian government as this corresponded with the US's geo-strategic objectives.
More broadly, by highlighting how the US welcomed the growth of IS in Syria, the leaks fatally undermine the entire rationale of the "War on Terror" the West has supposedly been fighting since 2001. These are, in short, bombshells that should be front page news, with lengthy investigative follow ups and hundreds of op-eds outraged at the lies and hypocrisy of western governments.
Instead, the disclosures have disappeared down the memory hole, with the huge gap between the importance of the revelations and the lack of coverage indicating a frighteningly efficient propaganda system.
It is worth noting however, that as an observer and newsreader - rather than seasoned expert - there may well be important context or information of which I am unaware, which provides a different take on the leaked material. This would lessen its importance and, therefore, justify the media having largely ignored it.
Of course, the best way of confirming the accuracy and importance of the leaks is for the media to do its job and thoroughly investigate the disclosures, to devote significant resources and manpower to the story, and to ask awkward and searching questions of established power.
