Rehabilitation coverage in the East of England (EoE) was outlined as “variable, inequitable and under-resourced 20 years ago. Despite progress in some rehabilitation domains, there remains much need for improvement in coordination and equity.

An important project completed during 2024, this report is now available on the trauma network website.
NHS bosses say the decision is a result of ongoing financial pressures.
Andrew Bateman's insight:
what is it about rehabilitation services that allow decisions like this? complex consequences of brain injury require specialist input from well trained professionals. A discontinuation of access to a service without adequate alternatives seems to me a breach of a person's right to rehab and will create problems elsewhere in the system. It's exasperating!

this blog page is now turning attention to colleagues in Beijing.... more on this separately. A global health question about availability of rehabilitation after brain injury has prompted me to review where we are with Rehab2030 at WHO. Progess it seems

Andrew Bateman's insight:
It has been a great week on campus this week. I was proud to have hosted a meeting we called the "reboot" of the Essex Neurology Network (ENN). This is an wonderful group of people from charity and voluntary sector, people with lived experience (of neurological conditions), NHS services, and academics. I've offered to help host this network because we at the University can help amplify the voices of people marginalised by their neurological conditions. I think we can help connect people to research. It is our role to help develop the workforce to be ready to provide care, rehabilitation and technologies to help for people living treat neurological conditions. This previous work by ENN remains an excellent resource and well worth the £10 for an entry into the topic for any aspiring clinician or care provider.

Andrew Bateman's insight:
I wonder how much traction this strategy is getting. Launched in 2017, clearly impacted by COVID19 - I saw mention that rehabilitation packages are developed but can't find them yet.
a bit of history as a backdrop to my return into the "ACPIN family" - as i prepare a lecture for ACPIN east of england AGM... i thought i'd remind myself what i said last time (nearly 25 years ago!)
The U-turn comes after "a rallying call of support", the specialist provider says.
Andrew Bateman's insight:
Given my last post about this local news, it is pleasing to see that the commissioners had a second look at their decision! Sometimes campaigning does pay off, so congratulations to all involved in making the case for keeping this service available.
The World Health Assembly endorsed the historic resolution on strengthening rehabilitation in health systems, which was developed under the leadership of Israel and cosponsored by 20 countries. The resolution calls for expanding and integrating rehabilitation in health systems as part of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), emphasizing the importance of rehabilitation in primary care and as part of emergency preparedness and response.
Andrew Bateman's insight:
it's a year on since the Resolution and noting the plans for WHO "to report on progress in the implementation of this resolution to the Health Assembly in 2026, 2028 and 2030.
This makes me wonder about what we can do in Essex that might move things along! Raising awareness of rehabilitation and inequalities. I am grateful that the very fine minds of colleagues are helping think about this. it's an inspiring time!

A few years ago I wrote a short piece about the value card sort task I had set up online. It's on page 26 of this magazine. This morning I couldn't find the article very easily so i thought I'd "scoop.it" here into my "collectania" of stuff; so here it is

A new play highlighting the effects of brain injury produced in conjunction with Headway Essex and Essex University’s Courage Research Project. A period of research and development, funded by Courage and Arts Council England, in 2021, will lead to a national touring production in 2022.
Andrew Bateman's insight:
Raising awareness of the invisible consequences of brain injury remains a continual challenge. Cognitive, emotional, communication, and physical consequences are explained through this play - the video shows the Packing Shed Theatre actors in an "R&D" preview working on the script in preparation for a planned tour. This took place on the stage of the Lakeside Theatre at the University of Essex - we are delighted to be supporting this play and discovering how it can help us achieve our objectives to provide the best possible engaging education to Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy students in our School. We are excited about how it may raise the profile of Headway Essex and Headway nationally. Most importantly it is a terrific, heart warming, funny, poignant and engaging play that really gives voice to some important stories.
March23. Exciting news- we have secured NIHR funding to support the tour beyond Essex. In March 23 we will be presenting at IBIA in Dublin !!
I read today the outcome of this consultation that clearly makes a tough decision that ultimately is all about finance and local decision making. I am sorry another solution couldn't be found.
no doubt more reflections to follow. this place was my entire life for 17 years (until 2019) and for today, I just am noting how sad I feel to read the conclusion and decision in black and white.
The latest episode of the Louder Than Words looks at the impact of brain injury. How do we find out more about more about the problems survivors face? What needs to change in the way we support them live their lives?
