Coenzyme Q10 deficiency has been implicated in fibromyalgia (FM). Past studies have demonstrated significant improvement in FM after oral CoQ10 supplementation. In the current study, the effects of oral CoQ10 was evaluated in four case reports of women with fibromyalgia.

Several studies have now shown that supplementation with CoQ10 improves symptoms in patients with fibromyalgia.It is thought that it is effective because it reduces inflammation, improves mitochondrial function and activates protein kinase activity. It also reduces the DNA damage caused by oxidative stress.

This excellent infographic lists the common symptoms of fibromyalgia, and cites a study that has shown that yoga is useful in its management. A high quality placebo controlled trial has also verified that homeopathy is beneficial: "Bell IR, et al: Improved clinical status in fibromyalgia patients treated with individualized homeopathic remedies versus placebo, Rheumatology, 43:577-82, 2004a." A new study, financed by Eli Lilly & Forest Labs, claims to have found the cause of fibromyalgia, but the claim falls flat on examination.

I reported on this study a few days ago, with the observation that even if this is true, it is not really a cause because it does not explain why these changes occur in the first place. This article is even more critical and points out that it is presented as an attempt re-patent drugs.
