Glowing Hair, Skin, and Nails With Probiotics

Glowing Hair, Skin, and Nails With Probiotics | naturopath | Scoop.it
We’re all aware of the expression “glowing with health” – and it’s often attached to women during pregnancy (“you’re glowing!”).
Cottesloe Naturopathic Clinic's insight:

What you put in your body affects the appearance of your skin, hair and nails. Now it appears that probiotics may be important for the health of skin cells and hair follicles. Scientists in this study fed probiotic bacteria to aging mice, and recorded improvements to the quality of their skin and hair over time. The probiotics induced a shift in the way the skin cells and hair follicles divide – resulting in a thicker “luxuriant” fur in probiotic-fed subjects versus the control animals.

Squid ink - A unique health food that challenges cancer and dangerous pathogens? Promising research says yes
Cottesloe Naturopathic Clinic's insight:

Green, purple and dark blue superfoods have been all the rage but now it appears that black foods - in this case squid ink - have equally potent virtues. Most actually comes from its relative the cuttlefish, long known to homeopaths as Sepia. The ink itself is composed mainly of melanin, but it also contains proteins, lipids, minerals (especially iron) and the amino acid taurine, as well as dopamine - a neurotransmitter associated with positive mental state. It has also been found to curb tumour growth and protect against the side effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Cottesloe Naturopathic Clinic's insight:

It may not be rocket science or unexpected, but it's good to have the proof. Telomeres on the ends of chromosomes are linked to aging. Bad diet and stress make them shorter, accelerating aging. Turmeric: A Wellness Promoting Tonic At Low Doses, Research Reveals | naturopath | Scoop.it
Turmeric has legendary status as a disease-fighting agent, but did you know that when administered in low doses to already healthy adults it significantly improves their wellness?
Cottesloe Naturopathic Clinic's insight:

Most existing research has focused on investigating natural substances and/or dietary interventions to improve the condition of subjects with already serious diseases. Now we have solid evidence that curcumin has wellness-promoting properties that will help otherwise healthy individuals live a longer life and reduce their chances of chronic disease as they age. This is preventative medicine, a different concept than "disease-fighting" - a war-like mentality implying that the body must be subjected to aggressive and sometimes dangerous treatments to beat it back into a state of symptom reduction...

Are You a Skinny Fat Person? 10 Steps to Cure the Skinny Fat Syndrome - Dr. Mark Hyman

Are You a Skinny Fat Person? 10 Steps to Cure the Skinny Fat Syndrome - Dr. Mark Hyman | naturopath | Scoop.it
The common wisdom is that if you are overweight you are unhealthy, and if you are thin, you are healthy.  But new research points to just how dangerous being skinny can be – if you are a skinny fat person that is.
Cottesloe Naturopathic Clinic's insight:

The medical term for this is “MONW” or metabolically obese normal weight, which Dr Hyman refers to as being a "skinny fat person".  It means you are under lean but over fat – not enough muscle and too much fat (especially belly fat.)  It seems it is better to be fat and fit than thin and out of shape. Furthermore, if a skinny fat person gets diagnosed with diabetes they have more than twice the risk of death of those who are overweight when diagnosed...

Sweden rejects low-fat diet myth, encourages citizens to cut carbs and eat more fat
Cottesloe Naturopathic Clinic's insight:

Our deep seated fear of fat is completely unfounded, but the myth will die a long, slow death. Sweden leads the way. "Butter, olive oil, heavy cream, and bacon are not harmful foods," reads an  English translation of a local Swedish newspaper, reporting on the committee's  findings. "Quite the opposite. Fat is the best thing for those who want to lose  weight. And there are no connections between a high fat intake and  cardiovascular disease"
