The UK Met Office has chosen 21 names for upcoming autumn and winter storms after a public appeal for suggestions. There’s a name for each letter of the alphabet, but in line with the US convention, the less common letters Q, U, X, Y and Z have been left out.
It is hoped that naming storms will help raise awareness of severe weather and improve public safety.

For decades tropical storms which hit land in the USA or Asia have been given popular names. Now the Met Office wants us to follow suit in the UK. They believe the naming of storms which may hit our shores will help raise public awareness of severe weather events and they want our help to come up with the names.

I was watching some girly rom-coms today and one of them was 'When in Rome'. It stars Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel, but also featured Dax Shepard (pictured above) as one of Beths (Kristen Bell's character) "suitors". Dax plays a narcissistic model named Gale who is magically attracted to Beth when she takes his coin out of a love/wishing fountain. He comes on quite strong when they first meet....

They strike me as a mixture of cuddly, friendly and young (Barney, Imogen), cuddly, friendly and middle-aged (Nigel, Mary), and "oh bother we'd better reflect British diversity" (Clodagh, Tegan). I like the list but if anything it would make me take the storms less seriously: would Barney and Desmond really blow a tree onto your roof?
