OH! When my mother used to sing me this song, I thought she was singing "colly birds". Then I learned to read and saw it written down as "calling birds" and thought she or I must have misheard it.* Now I learn that my mother was right all along (not for the first or last time, I expect). To clarify a tiny bit, crows and ravens are black birds, rather than blackbirds :) A very handsome name nonetheless.
