A tale of two brothers: one uses an umlaut in his surname, and the other doesn't. Vernoeming's detective work reveals that their father's name had an umlaut, but the brothers' names are legally registered without. One brother has opted to restore the family diacritic, and there is some speculation on whether it makes a difference to how he pronounces the name.

Erm...I'm scooping this for the sake of keeping the record complete, but with a very large caveat that it's probably overthinking the fact that two people chose to name their child after family members and use a nickname that somewhat resembles both names, and is also currently popular as a given name. Argues, that the traditional of naming after family members is "stodgy, awkward and timid". Debatable, but I agree that Mila is probably a more usable nickname than Lama.
