Maiden Names, on the Rise Again

Maiden Names, on the Rise Again | Name News | Scoop.it
The share of women keeping their names when they marry has increased, but today it seems more about practicality, less of a feminist statement.

The Gentle Art of Discussing Baby Names

The Gentle Art of Discussing Baby Names | Name News | Scoop.it
Being a life-long name-nerd, I spent a lot of my younger years dreaming up names for future children. In these daydreams, I was joined at the hip with someone who agreed enthusiastically with my na...
Clare's insight:

Very funny and all too believable.  I particularly enjoyed reactions to Edmund, Jasper (I'm with him on that one), and all those poor girls' fathers.

Man Turns the Tables and Takes His Wife's Name in Marriage Instead - Babble

Man Turns the Tables and Takes His Wife's Name in Marriage Instead - Babble | Name News | Scoop.it
For many modern couples, getting married brings up the question of name-changing — will the blushing bride do as all our ancestors once did and acquire her husband’s last name?
Clare's insight:

Here's one of our occasional name-change-at-marriage-issues interludes.  It also gives me an excuse to tell you about two of my friends who are engaged.  One has a single surname and the other has a double-barrelled one, both unremarkable two-syllable English names (one place name, one adjective, and one occupation).  They both want to have the same name as any future children, but neither wants to take the other's name, so they've decided to both take a new surname when they marry; they just haven't decided what.  When I last saw them, it came up in conversation a lot, with people suggesting comedy smooshes.  My suggestion, which they called "the most sensible so far" (which says something about the quality of the other suggestions!) was to make a name from the first two letters of each of their surnames.  The result sounds a bit French, or possibly Swahili.  Anyway, we have many months to see what they choose in the end.  End of rambling anecdote.

Did your name make the list?
Clare's insight:

Found via First & Middle Baby Names.  I know at least three couples who are on both lists, so that bodes well for them!

How I Changed My Name

How I Changed My Name | Name News | Scoop.it
My name has never felt like something I can shed easily, putting on a new one; not like going off to college and deciding to tell all your new friends your name is Liz rather than Beth. Were it not for this cosmic wallop to the head, I would still be on the fence. I do know now that for me it’s the right thing; for Cam and I to share the same name.

Ein ungewöhnlicher Name kommt selten allein = Unusual names come in pairs

"Irgendwie finden sich die Träger von ungewöhnlichen Namen gerne zusammen."

Clare's insight:

Are people with unusual names more likely to marry each other?  Elbowin has just found a couple called Herfried and Gislinde, and has previously spotted Horand and Fidelius, and Gyburg and Arbogast.
