Cross-gender names are a hugely debated topic among name nerds. I tend to see a lot of reaction against them- it seems in most naming circles, James is for boys and Jade is for girls. But some name enthusiasts see no problem with borrowing a name from one gender to bestow on another. Like it…

One of you readers emailed me asking about the name Kelly! I haven't heard anyone consider the name Kelly in a long time, it's definitely in hibernation until its spring comes again (which it will, as it does for most names). You know I love doing name research! So off to the dusty shelves I…

Remarks such as: “Wow, your parents must’ve really wanted a boy … was that your planned name?” Thank you, stranger, but no, my parents spent months pondering just the right name.

Boys names becoming girls names is a trend that has become popular in recent years and is particularly prevalent in America. However, we think these tomboy names are incredibly cool and would suit any little girl perfectly. Some guidelines we had when looking at names were.. Originality (not have a name that is “in”), A girls name for a boy (and boys name if we were having a girl- weird I know) Meaning in a m=name and connection to our family And most importantly, a name that deeply resonated with the essence of my child.
We had a couple of names in the hat and then waited until he was born to be able see which suited him best.
The moment we looked V in the eyes for the first time there was no other name for him but Valentine. He is such a sweet and loving soul that “Valentine” is a perfect match for him.
Cary happens to be born on Valentines day so thats a cute connection to the name but not the reason we chose it. Our family motto is “Be Love”, most of the men in our family and community have this tattooed on them as a reminder that love is the answer to freedom as well as a prosperous, happy and healthy life. So it seemed fitting to have “Valentine” on our list (the name originated from Saint Valentine who was a true representative of love)

Hi! I'm a transgender boy and have started going by the name Kellin. My friends have said they support me, but they keep on referring to me by my old name. I don't know how to correct them without seeming rude. How can I be more assertive with my name?
