NameFreak!: Where Are They Now?: An Update

NameFreak!: Where Are They Now?: An Update | Name News | Scoop.it

" Back in January, I completed a series called "Where Are They Now?" in which I took the Top 100 boys and girls names from 1911 and analyzed where they ranked in 2011. It was an attempt to see if the "100 Year Rule" was an accurate rule, but it ended up giving me a lot of interesting information that I wanted to update using the 2012 data."

Clare's insight:

I agree that I'd rather have a full name with a short form than just a short form.  However, as this post says, the UK statistics show that many parents disagree.

"If you've ever heard a favorite song of your youth pop up on an "oldies" station, you know the facts of fashion life: the past doesn't sit still. That holds as true for antique-styled names as it does for grunge rock."

Sibling Spotlight for Moses - British Baby Names

Sibling Spotlight for Moses - British Baby Names | Name News | Scoop.it
Below is a selection of British siblings with Moses, from the last century to modern times. The year relates to the decade of birth for that set. Brackets around the first name indicates that the person was called by their middle name.
Clare's insight:

I think this is one of my favourite sibling spotlights.  There are lots of favourites here (Reuben, Miriam, Alfred, Maud, Arthur, Edmund), and many interesting-in-a-good-way names (such as Merinda, Venetta, Elizanell, Meadow Lark, Faithful, Berrice, Asenath, and Beren!).

They say that it takes 100 years for names to come back into fashion. They aren't wrong.
Clare's insight:

Yes please to more of these names, especially Mabel and Edith.

I sometimes think it would be even more exciting if there were, say, a 500-year rule.  Or 800, or 1000, or 1500.

Nifty Names: How Vintage Are You Willing To Go?

Nifty Names: How Vintage Are You Willing To Go? | Name News | Scoop.it

"If you're a fan of those vintage, old-lady names, but aren't afraid to go far, far beyond the day-to-day retro, then the following list is for you! Here are the names for the brave and the determined, those who aren't afraid to name their little girl Bertha or their son Elmer...those who would rather blaze the baby-naming trails than trail in their wake."

Clare's insight:

Do you like your names clunky and Germanic or extravagantly classical?  Then look no further.  Some more random thoughts: will Norbert ever make a comeback?  Here's Annis again, hooray!  I'd also recommend Hilda for this list, except that I'm guarding it jealously.  And Cuthbert's so vintage he's there twice :P

Clare's insight:

This "huge poll" about baby names does sound interesting, although I'd recommend reading this Daily Mail article with your best critical thinking head on (for example, how can we quantify how many parents choose names based on "fashion trends" when everyone's choice creates the trends?)

All that being said, Stanley and Mabel are lovely.
