In this week's baby name news, invented names and regional pronunciations are discussed. Plus Odessa, Emma, Everly, Walker, Fletcher, Tigerlily and more.
Clare's insight:
Another week's gone by, and here's some of the major name news.
Clare's insight:
A tale of two brothers: one uses an umlaut in his surname, and the other doesn't. Vernoeming's detective work reveals that their father's name had an umlaut, but the brothers' names are legally registered without. One brother has opted to restore the family diacritic, and there is some speculation on whether it makes a difference to how he pronounces the name.
Clare's insight:
A bit of investigation reveals that, yes, François Boulangé is his real name and no, he didn't translate his run-of-the-mill Dutch name into French as a stage name. Still, it's a good thought. I very much like translatable names. - Klara
Clare's insight:
The popularity of Amber has fallen in recent years, both in the Netherlands and the US. Is this in any way connected to the name of the missing persons charity AMBER Alert? The majority of voters so far think it doesn't make a difference, but some now like the name less.
Clare's insight:
The title needs no translation: it's apparently the longest name of a living Dutch person, who also has intriguingly-named siblings.
The hero in one of the most famous romances of all time, Tristan was strong, brave, handsome and handy with a sword. As namesakes go, it's a pretty good one.
Clare's insight:
Another very interesting post, delving into the Pictish past.

First, a quick reminder of the top names in Australia: National – Charlotte and Jack New South Wales – Ruby and William Victoria – Olivia and Jack Queensland – Charlotte and Jack South Australia – ...
Clare's insight:
Quite a bit of variety between the top names in the various regions.
"It's time for my monthy round-up of other blogs that have profiled geeky names!"
Clare's insight:
It's nice to learn about the geek associations of names others have posted about. Who knew?
Many prospective parents feel paralyzed trying to come up with a name for their baby, working to find the elusive name that is exotic yet not bizarre, classic yet not pompous, on trend but not trendy.
Clare's insight:
A parent's commentary on choosing names. Particularly interesting are the comments on demographics:
"Now, most urban professionals I know limit themselves to one or two, which perhaps adds to the pressure to make every name count. Many of us are also starting families at a later age, with perhaps more time to consider the potential long-term consequences of a child’s name".
CSO statistics reveal five top boys’ names have remained the same since 2007
"Less common spellings and popular foreign monikers make the 500s an interesting mix. Show your Gaelic pride with Kieran and Maeve, get your gender neutral on with Finley (M) and Sawyer (F), or go K-tastic with Kelvin and Kenya. I’m looking forward to seeing your creations!"
Clare's insight:
Another tricky one - too many favourite girls' names and not enough boys'. |
The whole process of naming a baby can cause some parents to practically check into the insane asylum. There are so many choices, good names, bad name...
Jessica writes: I hope you and your readers can help us. We have narrowed our list down to our final 2 - but my husband wants one name and I want another. We are due at the end of June, and I promi...
Clare's insight:
I do like a good newspaper announcement: featuring Silke and Shanaya, Stijn and Shawn Cassius, and more.
Clare's insight:
In the wake of Phaedra, Voornamelijk thinks about other men in the public eye with traditionally feminine names. There aren't so many in the Netherlands, but one example is Aleid Wolfsen (assuming Aleid is in the Adelaide-family of names).
Clare's insight:
Apparently so, in the Netherlands as in the US.* I like some of the Jul-names listed here, like Julot and Julin.
*Typing "Julia" into NameVoyager. I tried to check for England and Wales at http://names.darkgreener.com but it made my computer unhappy.
Clare's insight:
The website this points to (http://www.ine.es/en/daco/daco42/nombyapel/nombyapel_en.htm) is very interesting: as well as the 2011 statistics, it also gives data for the popularity of names among people of all ages in Spain. This can be used in various ways: for example, this post finds that the most popular Dutch names in Spain belong to an older generation, fitting with the perception that the Dutch population there is largely retired expats. (Do correct me if I've interpreted this wrong.)
.There are many to choose from- if they are too obvious for a first name consider them for a middle!girlsJune- The obvious choice- short sweet and waiting in the wings for a revival with siblings H...
Clare's insight:
Beyond June and Juniper - Juni or Junius, perhaps?
"Recently I've been noticing that quite often in movies you'll see comments about names - usually when someone meets someone for the first time, or talking about someone they've never met, or about what someone has chosen to name their child. So I thought that when I notice one (or remember one!) I'll pop it in a blog entry."
Clare's insight:
Good idea: I'm sure there are plenty of quotations out there.
A commenter asked what I thought about creating your own baby name: In her situation, she'd cobbled together parts of her name and another person she loved to
"Naming a baby is, quite simply, fun. ... Naming our children is a last indulgence; one more chance to pretend that we can control who they ultimately become. Is it any wonder that we prolong the pleasure?"
Clare's insight:
A very different take on the naming process.
The CSO today released its annual report on the most popular baby names in Ireland. The Daily Shift's Aoife Bennett brings the list... Jack and Emily were once again the most popular baby names in ...
From
www
"Jack and Emily were the most popular babies’ names registered in 2012. Jack retains the top position it has held every year since 2007 and Emily has retained the number one spot that it first claimed in 2011."
Clare's insight:
Dia duit! Ireland has just released its 2012 name statistics. On this official site, you'll find top 100 lists with ranking, raw numbers, and in alphabetical order, the biggest risers and fallers, the top names in each region, and top names by parents' place of residence and country of origin. And a graph of the popularity of the two longstanding top names. Enjoy!
