"The Great Gatsby, with the recent new film, is "in Fashion. How about the names from it though? The book actually has a plethora of names, as the narrator (Nick Carraway) decides at one point to list ALL of the people who are at one of Gatsby's parties. I don't think I can possible expound on every name, but I would like to list as many of them here as possible, and comment on some that interest me."
Clare's insight:
It hadn't realised 'The Great Gatsby' was such a treasure trove of names; but it is! Both first names and surnames.
"Some people may not like it, some people may think it's really cool, but we don't really care - that's why we're not telling anybody," he explains....

Some baby names are big, flashy, designer choices. And then there are the blue jean baby names: cozy, comfy, quiet, and eminently wearable in everyday life. - baby names
Clare's insight:
I really like the names-clothes analogy. I'm trying to think of more examples now...which names would be an A-line skirt/a cosy jumper/neon legwarmers?
'Waarom heeft die man eigenlijk een meisjesnaam?', vroeg ik me gisteren af toen ik las dat oud-Feyenoordvoorzitter Jorien van den Herik zich heeft uitgesproken tegen de bouw van een nieuw stadion.
Clare's insight:
Jorien: until 1943, it was exclusively a male name, albeit an uncommon one. Then girls started to be called Jorien, and now they outnumber the male Joriens by 1138 to 23. The name's done a shift within van den Herik's lifetime.
Prins Filip wil, als hij op 21 juli koning der Belgen is geworden, officieel Philippe gaan heten. ‘Wie wetten ondertekent kan dat juridisch gezien slechts onder één naam’, laat een woordvoerder van het paleis weten.
Clare's insight:
When he accedes to the Belgian throne on 21 July, Prince Filip (who started life as Filips) plans to reign as King Philippe.
And here's a weather-appropriate joke: what do you call a Frenchman wearing sandals? Philippe Philoppe. You're welcome. |
"I love Avia! I have recently put it in my top 10 list that is how much I love it. I think it's really cute without being too popular. I love it as an alternative to Ava."
Clare's insight:
Nice one. The similar-looking Avis was one of my favourites for a long time.

"Jaina is a name some of you might not be familiar with but by 2015, I am pretty sure that this name could gain in popularity. With two massive blockbusters in the works that could possibly use characters with the name Jaina, this might be the female name to watch."
Harry Potter author's double identity as crime novelist Robert Galbraith puts her in a long tradition of invented identities
"Ever since Nameberry started its bonus blog Berry Juice in May, I have had the pleasure to contribute six times. Here's a collection of the links!"
Clare's insight:
Goodness, did Berry Juice really only start in May? It feels like it's been going for yonks... and Namefreak! (and others) have been very industrious in that time.

She shares sounds with stylish names, but Clea is a literary, historic rarity with interesting ties to comics. Would you consider Clea for a daughter?
"Elisabeth Wilborn of You Can't Call it "it" has some issues with certain kinds of kreeatif spellings. Do you agree with her? Would you go for Kaylie or Kayleigh?"
Clare's insight:

Clare's insight:
That long e (a bit like in Kate but not a diphthong, I think?) seems to be the sound of the moment for girls' names in the Netherlands, and here are 44 lovely examples of it, including Evita, Eefje, Esila, and more.
Duitsers hebben met veel strengere naamwetten te maken dan Nederlandse aanstaande ouders. Zo mogen ze hun kind geen geografische of dierennaam geven.
Clare's insight:
A post on German naming laws, certainly worth a read (or a spin through Google Translate).
My takeaway fact is the German word for the love of exotic/celebrity-inspired/un-German names: die Chantalismus. This has led to an intriguing Tumblr site* featuring interesting German names spotted on bumper stickers. Who knew that was a thing? It might well be appearing on this site in future...

Interesting: 10% could make quite an impact on the national statistics, even at this stage in the year.
I was relieved to find that this is an uncontroversial post that can be read without a rise in blood pressure. Go ahead and enjoy.
