Unemployment continues to fall
By the end of December 2017, 8,575 people – including 8,071 residents – were claiming full unemployment allowance.
30-01-2018
According to the latest figures from the National Employment Agency (ADEM), the number of job seekers at the end of 2017 stood at 17,283. In 2016, that figure was 18,122 – meaning that in one year, unemployment fell by 4.6%, or 839 people. The unemployment rate is currently 5.8%. In late 2014, the rate touched on 7%.
The latest published figures confirm a steady fall in the number of unemployed people in all areas. The reduction has been most favourable for job seekers under the age of 30 (-8.6%) and those with few qualifications (-7.6%). The number of long-term unemployed has dropped by 7%. The number of people benefiting from an initiative or programme for job seekers has stayed the same over the past year.
Favourable figures
A series of labour market indicators are now positive as a result of the long-awaited economic recovery. The Minister of Labour, Employment and the Social and Solidarity Economy, Nicolas Schmit, is even targeting a 4% unemployment rate over the coming years.
But achieving this objective will require more than simply enjoying the favourable climate created by economic growth, which is boosting the labour market. The aim is to step up efforts to integrate job seekers into the employment market. To this end, continuing training in the areas of digitisation and automation is vital, as is the consolidation of partnerships with companies.
