Street lights are taken for granted now, but of course the concept had to start somewhere. In North America, the first quaint effort to light the streets was a single lantern in 1719 in Boston.

The LED (light emitting diode), has a very long history. It dates back to as early as 1907, ... The first LED lighting products became available to the public in the late 1960′s, and produced a red light.

When electric power was in its infancy, there was a debate on how exactly to light up a city. Today we have settled on streetlights lining the sidewalks, but once upon a time, they had giant towers that re-created the moon.
