Teacher trainers/educators play a key role in the process of normalisation, as defined by Bax (2003), in the training of foreign language teachers to use technology as a regular part of their practice. This study explores teacher trainer attitudes towards adopting technology, their readiness to use it on teacher training courses, and their current levels of comfort in integrating it on Cambridge CELTA courses, a pre-service course currently followed by approximately 12,000 candidates annually. The results and discussion will stimulate some reflection as to what degree such courses are responsive to the objective of integrating technology in the training of foreign language teachers.

Although the device's 10-inch screen may not compare to a full-sized, physical whiteboard, it can be quite handy to use a virtual whiteboard with team members remotely, and the iPad's form factor suits itself quite well to exactly that.

We’re entering into a new era of the Internet, where users are now looking to find validated sources within the mix of information overload that we all experience, said Steve Rubel, EVP of Global Strategy and Insights for Edelman during his presentation at Mashable Connect 2011. Audiovisual material enhanced with captions or interlingual subtitles is a particularly powerful pedagogical tool which can help improve the listening comprehension skills of second-language learners. Captioning facilitates language learning by helping students visualize what they hear, especially if the input is not too far beyond their linguistic ability.

In addition, while the majority of schools are using either Smart Notebook or Activ software there are a lot of other pieces of software out there that teachers are using in schools. It can be frustrating to see activities that are reliant on a very specific tool in one piece of software, only to find that you can’t do that in the software you have in school. Tools such as tables, handwriting recognition, interactive resources, maths tools, timers and suchlike. All are fun, but not always essential.

Most university classrooms have gone through a massive transformation in the past ten years. I'm not talking about the numerous initiatives for multiple plasma screens, moveable chairs, round tables, or digital whiteboards. The change is visually more subtle, yet potentially much more transformative.

Jenkins et al (2006) and Gee (2004) argue that the new media revolution is different from other technological revolutions in that it is quickly permeating all aspects of our lives, professional and personal, and is affecting how and with whom we communicate. However, only a small portion of youth move beyond consumption of digital media to become creators of them. Researchers have explained this by pointing to the cost of production equipment, limited access to human resources for learning, and the labor intensity of production as deterrents.

Storytelling continues to gain popularity as an educational activity. As it stimulates a deep thinking and basic literacies, it also enhances and enriches the learning experience for student voices. Storytelling is a very powerful way of communicating with our peers and portrays to others who we are and what our own stories are. It also provides an opportunity to connect with a group by creating a shared experience. This is vital in any community but more so in an educational setting where we are nurturing and fostering creativity.

Digital storytelling is simply using computer-based tools to tell stories. There are many different ways to do this – from making movies, recording voices, creating animations or electronic books. In schools they can help to take a task that might be seen as mundane – write a report, write a story, explain a process, describe an experiment – and turn it into something a whole lot more interesting.

As always, I have music on in the background to at least provide a small amount of ‘disturbance’, working on the idea that we are very seldom in a completely noiseless environment, background music not only provides a pleasant atmosphere, it also prepares learners for real world ‘noise’.

Demand for English is set to grow and, according to ELT researcher David Gaddol, it will peak at around 2 billion learners in the next 10 to 15 years. Given the scale of learning it is unlikely that traditional, face-to-face language providers will be able to meet this need. The alternative for people who either cannot afford or get access to classroom-based lessons is likely to be online learning. So what does virtual teaching currently offer?
