Content Curation as a New Form of Journalism

When curation creates stories .......

Carmenne Kalyaniwala's curator insight, October 3, 2013 5:59 AM

Curation as a new form of journalism.... hmmm, interesting! This does however raise questions about the authenticity of the information being disseminated, isn't it? Are we moving away from first-hand reports? How accurate is the information one curates? Why does one really curate? Lack of creativity??? Lack of first-hand info? Curation, yes, it's an interesting concept, but it does raise a lot of questions. Let's not accept it just as it is....

Maria Persson's curator insight, October 3, 2013 6:29 AM

Lengthy but worth a read - makes you think about the future of journalism but the exciting prospect of hearing currently unknown and new voices.

Planting the seeds of a digital literacy education program

Planting the seeds of a digital literacy education program | Learning Literacies | Scoop.it

The main objective of the library sessions is to increase students’ awareness of the library as an important part of university life, and to help them develop some digital literacy skills along the way.

The sessions will be based on gaming principles, with the students organised into teams to complete challenges involving the use of digital technologies to earn points or rewards. Each team will have an ipad mini, and use a range of apps to complete the challenges, which will have them moving around the library, learning about the library as a virtual and physical space, and completing activities which teach them information literacy skills related to searching, evaluating, managing and sharing information.

Blogging for Dummies (and the time constrained)

Blogging for Dummies (and the time constrained) | Learning Literacies | Scoop.it
When you hear the word blogger, what image comes to mind?  A sacred group of people anointed by the All Mighty with special powers who unleash their acerbic editorial tongue lashing from 40-story skyscrapers in major cities around the world?

Guillaume Decugis's curator insight, November 14, 2013 10:12 PM

When we launched the private beta of Scoop.it, TheNextWeb's Martin Bryant called it "blogging without blogging". I liked the term and made included it in my Twitter bio.

Of course blogging and curating content are different things and I won't go into a debate of whether one is better than the other. However, Andrew makes a good point on our blog explaining why the time constrained who have expertise might find it easier to curate content than blogging. This was our starting point for creating Scoop.it: we had things to say but not the time to write them. We also saw a lot of bad blogging that was just paraphrasing existing content under a false pretence of creation. And we saw good curators getting traction too and bringing a lot of value.

Andrew Federici's curator insight, November 15, 2013 12:37 AM

Curation is the new creation...and it works.

Tom Evans's curator insight, November 15, 2013 4:31 PM

Curation though should be done with creation in mind - joining dots & spotting patterns is the name of the game

Expert-Level Social Media Shortcuts Worth Knowing - Edudemic

Expert-Level Social Media Shortcuts Worth Knowing - Edudemic | Learning Literacies | Scoop.it
Do you know how to play 'snake' in YouTube? Quickly DM someone on Twitter using keys? These social media shortcuts are a great set of time-saving tips!

Keyboard shortcuts are an easy way to save yourself some time and typing if you spend a lot of time click-clacking away at your keyboard like I do. The most common ones are somewhat universal (to many applications, at least). Control + P to print, Control + C to copy, Control + V to paste. Saves a ton of time, especially if you’re editing documents (or blog posts).
