HomeKit is the name for Apple's home automation framework for developers.

With HomeKit, our iPhones and iPads have a rational way to configure, communicate with, and control "the internet of things" around us, including connected lights, speakers, security systems, blinds, and more.

Both locally when you're home and remotely when you're away, through apps and through Siri, Apple's virtual personal assistant.

HomeKit is doing all this seamlessly, but also securely and privately.

So, how does HomeKit work?

The Home app makes it easy to control all of your home’s smart accessories from your favorite iOS devices with a touch, automatically, or with Siri.

... Sure, Apple has lots of work to do with HomeKit.

They need to make devices work better together and they need to start doing more market education.

Apple jumped into the smart home world with the announcement of its HomeKit platform two years ago.

But until today, it's felt like one huge piece of that platform was missing: a way to control it

HomeKit Weekly is a series focused on smart home accessories, automation tips and tricks, and everything to do with Apple’s smart home framework. 

Fresh off of WWDC 2018, this week we’re looking at HomeKit’s debut on the Mac through macOS Mojave.

Coming later this fall, macOS 10.14 includes a version of Apple’s Home app for smart accessory control.

Siri on the Mac also learns how to control HomeKit with voice commands.

• The lights dim.
• Your home theater system pulses to life.

What we're witnessing, aside from a friend showing off his hotly connected new digs, is a demonstration of Apple's HomeKit in action.

Originally announced in 2014, HomeKit is now mature and ready for the mainstream.

And if we're any indication, it's going to flood the holiday gift lists.
