Local Newspapers Are Vanishing. How Should We Remember Them? - ProPublica | Journalism & Ethics | Scoop.it

As smaller newspapers shrink or disappear, it’s easy to romanticize the role they played. But one reporter’s memories of the heyday of local journalism reveal a much more complicated reality.

CDJM's insight:

Since 1990, the number of newspaper employees in the United States has plunged from 455,000 to fewer than 90,000, even as the population has increased by a third. What such a decline tells about our democratic societies ?

How do the European Press Councils deal with journalistic ethics on social media ? - PressCouncils.eu | Journalism & Ethics | Scoop.it

The Council for Mass Media in Finland carried out a research project on the social-media-related rulings of the European media councils. The study analysed a total of 250 resolutions made by seven European media councils over a ten-year period. The report highlights the spectrum of ethical issues related to the use of social media as both a source and publishing platform of journalism.

CDJM's insight:

One of the most difficult issues for the media councils has been where to draw the boundaries of their own authority in relation to social media. While some councils only accept complaints about content posted on the media outlets’ official accounts, other councils also assess posts by individual journalists.

CDJM's insight:

The ideas of the “first digital president”, who was among the most subject to disinformation, on what appears to him to be a major disruptive innovation like electricity. "I am concerned about business models that just feed people exactly what they already believe and agree with and are all designed to sell them stuff", he says. "Do I think that’s great for democracy? No. Do I think that’s something the government itself can regulate? I’m skeptical that you can come up with perfect regulations there. What I actually think needs to happen, though, is that we need to think about different platforms and different business models."

Media backtracks on Gaza hospital blast after relying on Hamas as source - NPR (United States)

Media backtracks on Gaza hospital blast after relying on Hamas as source - NPR (United States) | Journalism & Ethics | Scoop.it

The BBC and The New York Times (NYT) are among the news outlets revisiting their coverage of a deadly blast at a Gaza hospital, the american National Public Radio network (NPR) reports. They relied on Hamas as an authoritative source of information. The NYT said it would re-examine its protocols and safeguards for covering breaking news in light of the incident.

CDJM's insight:

"The audiences' perceptions of media outlets' fairness determine how much trust they have — not just in the veracity of specific coverage but the independence of their journalists, NPR concludes. Speed may matter a lot to readers, viewers and listeners. Accuracy and fairness still matter more, especially when stakes are so high."

It's hard to avoid the phrases 'granted anonymity to ensure candor' or to '... protect confidentiality in sensitive situations' these days. Washington Post journalist wins Ethics in Journalism Award | Journalism & Ethics | Scoop.it

William Wan, a reporter focused on mental health and people suffering on the margins of society at The Washington Post, , has won the Ethics in Journalism Award from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). He was cited specifically for his run of coverage exploring systemic problems facing mentally ill youths.

CDJM's insight:

In the United States, the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) rewards ethical skills concretely implemented by journalists. “The ethical challenges [ William Wan] faced revolved around intimately reporting on suicide and mental health without further traumatizing the victims, causing a contagion effect or making sure the interviewees weren’t passively written about,” the SPJ said in its announcement.

Seeking to Reward Journalistic Ethics Online - CIMA

Seeking to Reward Journalistic Ethics Online - CIMA | Journalism & Ethics | Scoop.it

In an online environment increasingly polluted with false information, trust in news has steadily eroded over the years, notes a report for the Center for International Media Assistance (CIMA). At the same time, high-quality news has been losing already scarce advertising revenue to clickbait and viral misinformation. Digital trust initiatives, which evaluate and label news outlets, aim to remedy these issues. While their definitions of what constitutes trustworthy news may vary, these initiatives share common goals : to help independent media outlets survive by making them stand out to audiences and advertisers. [The CIMA is a think tank focusing on four cross-cutting issue areas in media development: effectiveness, sustainability, innovation, and funding.]

CDJM's insight:

Beyond their differences, the key enigma that every digital news trust initiative - such as The Trust Project, NewsGuard, or JTI - strives to resolve is a question of definition : how to define a "trustworthy" media ? And once defined, how can it be operationalized into a set of objective and measurable criteria ?, analyses Eleonora Mazzoli, specialized in digital media and platform regulation, with an interdisciplinary academic and professional background in media economics and broadcasting policy.
