ISOJ panel explores evolving definitions of journalists and journalism in the era of influencers – International Symposium on Online Journalism

ISOJ panel explores evolving definitions of journalists and journalism in the era of influencers – International Symposium on Online Journalism | Journalism & Ethics | Scoop.it

With influencers rising in popularity, debates about what constitutes “journalism” and a “journalist” have found their way into newsrooms. While many are concerned with ethical standards of influencer reporting, there is an undeniable shift towards consumers receiving their news from individuals rather than news organizations.

CDJM's insight:

According to a study, strong majorities of all Americans see “news organizations that employ reporters” as critical for an informed society, ranging from 73% to 85%. But, meanwhile, about three-quarters of Americans believe that “everyday people” can produce journalism.

7 opportunities and challenges for journalists in 2025 | Journalism & Ethics | Scoop.it
Confidence is low in the news industry as it marches into 2025, according to the Reuters Institute's annual report, Journalism, Media, and Technology Trends and Predictions 2025, published on January 9, 2025. This is based on a survey of 326 digital leaders from 51 countries and territories.
CDJM's insight:

It highlights the major challenges and opportunities journalists face in 2025, including threats to press freedom from political pressures, economic difficulties, and the rise of misleading technologies. It emphasizes the need for journalists to adapt proactively by embracing innovations like AI, social video, and voice technology to stay relevant. The analysis raises the issue of balancing these technological advances with maintaining journalistic integrity and independence in an increasingly complex media environment.

Australia is heading to the polls on 3 May, and as we enter the campaign, the amount of misinformation we are exposed to is likely to increase.

CDJM's insight:

As the advertising industry knows, we tend to believe what we repeatedly hear. That is why disinformation campaigns are so dangerous, say Piers Howe and Allegra Micomonaco (University of Melbourne).

Since Feb. 11, AP reporters have been prevented from being at Oval Office events, on Air Force One flights and at other official presidential events because the news organization refused to primarily use the name Gulf of America, as wanted by president Donald Trump when referring to the body of water, instead of the Gulf of Mexico. “The First 48” and the Wrongly Convicted Man — ProPublica

“The First 48” and the Wrongly Convicted Man — ProPublica | Journalism & Ethics | Scoop.it

Edgar Barrientos-Quintana spent 16 years behind bars wrongly convicted for a shooting featured on “The First 48”, an american documentary news magazine television series, broadcasted on A&E for more than twenty years. The Minnesota attorney general’s office effectively alleged that the show shaped the case instead of the case shaping the show.

CDJM's insight:

"The First 48" is a popular program filmed in various cities in the United States, offering an insider's look at the real-life world of homicide investigators with the cooperation of local police services. This judicial error, in which the show is involved, shows the limits of the genre.

Elon Musk and the Right are recasting reporting as "doxxing" - The New York Times | Journalism & Ethics | Scoop.it

Right-wing influencers are criticizing journalists who have published public information about government employees.

CDJM's insight:

"Doxxing" is publishing private information about someone with malicious intent. The term refers to a revenge tactic, originally used by hackers, to bully, harass or intimidate people online. But Elon Musk and others have expanded the definition this month, applying it to journalists and others seeking to hold the government accountable by reporting on public information. A way to try to intimidate and chill the media at a crucial moment.

The Decline of Journalism Ethics: A Crisis in Media Integrity

The Decline of Journalism Ethics: A Crisis in Media Integrity | Journalism & Ethics | Scoop.it
The integrity of journalism, once a cornerstone of democratic societies, is facing significant challenges in today’s rapidly evolving media landscape – writes Owain Glyndwr. Several factors contribute to the erosion of journalistic ethics, including financial pressures, technological advancements, and political influences. Financial Pressures and Compromised Integrity Economic constraints have led to practices such as “chequebook […]
CDJM's insight:

It warns about the growing decline of journalistic ethics, threatened by economic, technological, and political pressures that undermine media integrity. It denounces the rise of “churnalism,” reliance on unverified press releases, and the influence of powerful economic interests on content. Through the controversial example of Reuters and its coverage of Appin, it questions how can reliable and independent information be preserved in the face of profitability pressures and potentially biased narratives? The answer seems to lie in a collective awakening in favor of the fundamental principles of journalistic ethics.
