With Join.me, you can share your Windows PC or Mac's desktop with up to 250 people over the Internet, a nifty trick that's useful for conducting presentations, engaging in collaborative brainstorming or seeking troubleshooting help from distant geeks. The free version is one of the Web's great bargains. (Many people will find it a viable alternative to fancier paid services such as WebEx and GoToMeeting.) And the utter simplicity — setting up a sharing session takes just a few clicks and requires no registration — is as appealing as the price tag.

ASCD Express 7.02 - Radically Rethinking Standards Infusion

ASCD Express 7.02 - Radically Rethinking Standards Infusion | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it
Remember those fun activities? You know, the ones that made you want to teach in the first place? You likely have a folder of them in a cabinet somewhere. Maybe you wistfully look at them every September and promise yourself that this year you'll get to them. Get them out! Start with all the amazing things you want to do with your kids. Extended projects, art, music, manipulatives—go nuts.

Pick a two-week project; a month-long activity; or even yearlong, epic journey. Once you decide what you want to do, ask yourself what the value is in this activity. Be honest. You are an amazing teacher with fantastic judgment (and you're a snappy dresser, too). Here's the key: the activities you are dying to do are full of standards!Remember those fun activities?

Now that Occupy Wall Street has raised more than $450,000 in its first month—and donations of cash and goods continue to pour in—more attention has focused on an issue few people noticed before: that the donations are accepted through a charity, and that means donors can get a tax break for supporting the effort.

Interesting Opportunity to educate students about addressing poverty

Interesting Opportunity to educate students about addressing poverty | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

Dear Readers,

I received this message today and thought that perhaps it might be of interest. Please pass along as you deem appropriate.

Jim Lerman

In 2009, a group of Duke students surveyed high school students across the
country asking them what poverty is and what they can do to change it.
Overwhelmingly, students struggled to define it and could not brainstorm
any causes of poverty outside of a "lack of money". When asked if they
could make a difference, most students said they would like to but don’t
know how. This is how the idea of ChangeEducate was born.

We, a non-profit start-up venture, sought to figure out a way to educate
students on what poverty is,what causes it, what developmental solutions
are being used to change it, and how students can sustainably make an
actionable difference NOW.

Along with leading expert professors of education and international
development at Duke University, we developed a strong curriculum that meets
both state and Common Core standards. Our curriculum is designed for 5
class days and is composed of three main parts:

1.The DVD: A fully animated DVD that is broken into five segments lasting
10-12 minutes. Each chapter is played at the beginning of the class period
to establish the foundation for the lesson.
2.The Lesson Plans: Teachers can choose from over 35 engaging and fun
lesson plans with three different degrees of difficulty to fit your
classroom’s needs. The lesson plan activities culminate in students
becoming social entrepreneurs and creating a sustainable solution to a
particular aspect of poverty.
3.The Website: A highly interactive resource that enables students to
explore the complex concepts of poverty and engage in social
entrepreneurship.

Nearly three years after the conception of ChangeEducate, we are finally
ready to pilot the program in classrooms! I have been working with
ChangeEducate heavily since the beginning of my freshman year (Fall 2010),
and I truly believe that our curriculum has the potential to put the power
of change in the hands of high school students. We would love your support
in piloting this program in your classroom, if you are still teaching, this
January 2012. Essentially we are asking you for whatever time period you
feel you can carry out this program. Though it typically is a 5 day
curriculum, we would appreciate even just one day. Please read the
attached packet for more information.

We can adapt our curriculum for a classroom of any subject, size or level
from middle school to high school. No costs, additional training or
outside personnel are necessary. The pilot will offer food & prizes to
students.

Kind Regards,
Katie Guidera
