The Future Of Storytelling (Free MOOC) ~ iversity

The Future Of Storytelling (Free MOOC) ~ iversity | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

"Together with a whole network of media researchers, creators and students we will:
- learn storytelling basics such as antagonist/protagonist relationships, narrative/narrated time, ...
- have a look at exciting current media projects
- analyze how they are designed and executed based on aforementioned basics
- and discuss how (and if) new online tools and formats change the way stories are told and perceived.

The 8-chapter course starts on October 25th, 2013 and ends on December 20th, 2013.

It will offer weekly video material, lessons, interviews and tasks on the following topics (not necessarily in this order):
- storytelling basics
- serial formats (on the TV, web and beyond)
- storytelling in role-playing games
- interactive storytelling in video games
- transmedia storytelling
- alternate-reality gaming
- augmented reality and location-based storytelling
- the role of tools, interfaces and information architectures in current storytelling.

Our first Storytelling-MOOC will focus on fictional formats.

"Our goal is to inspire and help understand. To broaden our horizon of what is and might be possible and what has already been attempted, and what has succeeded or even failed - and why.
In several little tasks you'll analyze and practice storytelling on your own and in teams."

Jim Lerman's insight:

This MOOC will be led by a team based at the University of Potsdam, Germany

7 Data Visualization Tools You Can Use In The Classroom

7 Data Visualization Tools You Can Use In The Classroom | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

No matter what happens, there will always be a demand for data visualization tools. Data on its own can be pretty boring and brightening it up with images and other visual tools, it can make normally inaccessible information much easier to digest. (Editor’s Note: It’s also great for information reading literacy, and the new Common Core demand for multimedia “texts.”)

There are a number of fantastic tools out there that will present your data in an accessible manner. All of the tools listed below are free and chances are you’ve used one or two of the tools mentioned before.

3 Tools To Massively Increase Your Twitter Exposure | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

While Facebook and Google Plus social continue to push new features live, battling themselves over who can dominate the market, Twitter remains the most powerful driver of traffic to my site.

Ever since the t.co shortener was introduced, I can see it showing up at the top of my referrers at any given day.

This is very powerful and also quite reassuring. Continuing to improve and work on my Twitter performance has paid off greatly so far.

Jim Lerman's insight:

If you need a handy reference for your web publishing needs I have spent a few days pulling together the best tools I use and know-of that I would recommend to use, in an organized and curated link directory of over 70 different categories.

From "landing page builders" to "survey tools" and "domain name finders" I have you covered.

In general, I have limited the amount of tools and services listed per category to the top 5 I know as to serve also as a curated filter for the vast number of choices available out there.

This is definitely a work in progress as you need to continuously edit, refine and improve a directory like this to make it really useful. You are welcome to suggest tools and services that I have not included and I'll make sure that if they are valid ones they get their space too.

Free to access.

Sometimes the toughest step in building a new website or redesign can be the conceptual ones. Selecting a color palette is one of them that can be tough if you don’t have the right tools. So where do you start?

It all comes down to basic color theory and the color wheel. That same tool that teachers used in school really is the basis for how designers plan and use color in almost every project from the simplest web page to expansive brands with multiple sites and campaigns...

40+ Social Media Dashboard Tools for Tracking Stuff

40+ Social Media Dashboard Tools for Tracking Stuff | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

As part of my on-going work developing social media for business units, I’m often asked about what types of tools I used for tracking all that ‘social media stuff.’

Let me talk about how I go about creating a social media dashboard

The basic answer is that I don’t have one tool (I have dozens, if not hundreds.)

The real answer is that I am not tracking social media.
I am tracking key performance indicators (KPI)
I don’t care if it is a shipping problem or a viral YouTube video.
I simply want to know how I can track it, manage it, and maximize results.

With that said: when I think about creating a social media dashboard or using a platform to track results… I am looking at several unique business identifiers that define what tool I need for the job at hand...

30 Days with Siri

30 Days with Siri | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

Disclaimer: Apple has done such a good job of giving a Siri a persona that many times throughout this article I will refer to Siri as ‘her’ or ‘she’. Thanks for making me think my phone is a person, Apple.

This is the tale of a 2 hour a day commuter, 8 hour a day Fortune 500 company employee, and part time Lifehack editor living in the USA using Siri over the last 30 days. Enjoy.

It’s hard to believe that the iPhone 4S has already been out for a month. In this small amount of time we’ve seen iPhone 4S battery issues come and go, Siri outages, and data usage problems (that may not really be problems). But, just like every year, the iPhone proves to be one of the best selling smart phones of all time. It isn’t really surprising, is it?...
