Microsoft earbuds monitor wearers’ health to help pick the next song

Microsoft earbuds monitor wearers’ health to help pick the next song | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it

As part of their latest project called Septimu, Microsoft is working to incorporate health monitoring and mood detection into a pair of earbuds.  Capable of monitoring heart rate, temperature and other biorhythms, the in-ear device would even be able to select the most appropriate music depending on your mood.

The earphones incorporate sensors such as thermometers, inward-facing microphones and IMUs – which work a lot like accelerometers – to pick up on key indicators throughout your body. Apart from using the headphones to correct your posture, they can also act as a health and exercise diary, providing a low-cost coaching solution, or a non-invasive form of remote medical care.

The city is well on its way to becoming a capital of surveillance.

Via Thomas Faltin
Richard Platt's insight:

(from the Curator of IoT & Wearables): Seattle Police are seemingly very unwise to keep doing this, this is tolerated in the UK and EU but in the US this will liklely back fire and be a huge PR hit down the road.

The justification is that one kid's saved life justifies taking away implied privacy, what do you think?

Leo Norton's curator insight, November 19, 2013 3:56 PM

The new surveillance network is very advanced. I see the issues of privacy it could create. With the police watching you constantly in public some one could feel like their life is very public. Although it does take some sense of privacy from every person's life the surveillance program could cause a major decrease in crime if used correctly. I feel like the program should b kept up for a few years and then re-assessed to see how affective it is.

The Five Sources of Innovation Consultants

The Five Sources of Innovation Consultants | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it

Innovators, and innovation firms, spring from a wide array of sources.  Since there is no "standard" for innovation, in the manner of AICPA for accountants, or even a framework like ASQ or others provide for Six Sigma, innovation remains an umbrella term that contains a wide array of very different providers.

Via Peter Verschuere
Richard Platt's insight:

Decent answers but IT IS NOT ANY SINGLE TYPE OF INNOVATION of CONSULTANT that you should seek to support your corporate efforts but one who recognizes that all 5 are viable directions:

Strategy - Marketing - Creativity - Training/Coaching - Process

Note to Self: Including them all together without which a comprehensive take on innovation from your advisor / consultant and you are going to get beat.

Reason:  Innovation methods / practices are the tactics of strategy, and if your tactics are without an understanding of the larger picture, tools, mechanisms and outcomes that you'll get from a given method then your process will be weak and you will open yourself up to getting defeated by a hungeier, nimbler, more adaptable competitor.

Remember: Adapt or die is the call of innovation and why you do it, not so you can hire one of the 50 Thinkers on Innovation, that's pointless, and a likely, long term path to failure. for being a sycophant

The Google Zebra Algorithm Update and What You Can Do To Prepare

The Google Zebra Algorithm Update and What You Can Do To Prepare | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it

Recently, a certain search engine’s algorithm updates have not been so nice to most of the web. These Agents of G.O.O.G.L.E (yes I’m a Marvel fan!) arrive quietly, then tear relentlessly through the fabric of our very SEO souls! And what makes these updates even more frightening (and creepy) is these kill shots come in the form of cute and cuddly animals. I mean who would be afraid of a cute little Penguin…awe…or that cuddly Panda? And when was last time crowds ran screaming “The Hummingbird is coming…run for your lives!”? Never!

Well, the animal pain train is on its way again and this time its newest addition comes directly from the plains of Africa – code named  “Zebra” or as I like to call it “Your eCommerce store is toast…losers”!  Really, G.O.O.G.L.E should stop patronizing us and start giving these updates appropriately scary names like Gargoyle or Dragon, Sabertooth or Piranha! How many people would try to game the system when G.O.O.G.L.E Piranha is on its way? The question is, who will G.O.O.G.L.E Zebra hoof stomp with their so-called “Merchant Quality Update”?
