Tariff negotiations are continuing but the pandemic has impacted progress of intra-African trade.
Graham Watson's insight:

This BBC article looks at the state of intra-African trade, noting that having signed the the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA), which was meant to come into effect on 1 July, little has changed, as a result of Covid.

 

As a result, faced with intra-regional trade remaining low, and well below what might be expected, African consumers are often still relying on Chinese imports rather than African produced goods. 

 

It also highlights the importance of trade to development more widely.

I've scooped this sort of thing before - however, this clip highlights the importance of trade for development, and notes that the relatively low level of intra-regional trade in South Asia has plated a role in hindering economic development in the region.
