What does degrowth mean for the majority world? This open access book by Julien-François Gerber from the International Institute Social Studies takes up that question without implying that critiques of growth and visions of alternatives began in Europe. In fact, intellectual and political traditions from the global South – under different labels – have long advanced ideas that resonate with, and in some cases anticipated by decades, core degrowth principles.
At a time when energy security and affordability have risen to the top of the development agenda, 655 million people globally still lack access to electricity, and two billion use polluting fuels and technologies for cooking putting their health and well-being at risk.
