The stats in this posting make the importance of social media in the job search process UNDENIABLE: almost 60% of human resource professionals have specifically NOT hired candidates based on information discovered in their social media profiles, while over one-third have outright fired or severely admonished an existing employee on the same basis.
I would argue that for executive leadership – senior management level – it is even higher! Leadership starts at the top, as the old saying goes, and the tone is set there. I’m always confounded at what experienced people will frequently say, do, post, and comment across social media. Why? Because much of it is often unretractable; that’s right - PERMANENT in many cases.
As an executive recruiter, we always suggest that a candidate know his/her digital footprint before launching a job search. Literally Google yourself and start chasing rabbits. And don’t stop after that first page of results; go deep, because employers are doing the same. As this posting illuminates, over 40 percent of employers will make a judgment before inviting you to an interview based on your online photo alone! If one picture can make that difference, can you imagine the impact of your entire public photo stream in Facebook, Instagram, and others?
So before you begin the process of searching for newer and greener pastures, put yourself through a rigorous – and truthful – digital cleanup audit. Once that’s looking good, then you can you begin to build your online presence around a STRATEGY for finding that next great gig!
