A Handful of Games for Fun Typing Practice | Free Technology for Teachers

A Handful of Games for Fun Typing Practice | Free Technology for Teachers | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Last week I was writing a blog post early in the morning when my three year old came out of her room. She saw what I was doing and wanted to help. Since she can recognize all of the letters of the alphabet I let her type a few letters of each sentence. That little process reminded me of how fast I type even though my technique isn't perfect. All that to say, practicing typing whether through writing or playing a game does make you a quicker typist. For kids, playing a game is a more fun way to develop typing skills than writing blog posts or email. Here's a handful of games for kids to play to develop their typing skills.

How to Create QR Codes to Share Google Forms | Free Technology for Teachers | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Back in September I wrote about and made a video about how I'm using Google Forms as a sign-in/sign-out sheet for my classroom. Some of my colleagues are doing the same thing. One of my colleagues, Erin, had the good idea to create QRs code for the forms that students use the most and post them on the classroom wall.

How to avoid being fooled by fake news and false information | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
With so much information at our fingertips it can be easy to come across something online that isn’t quite as accurate or reliable as it should be. This kind of information is often called Fake News but a better description might be false information because it affects more than news stories.

Higher Education Digital Capability Framework | HolonIQ

Higher Education Digital Capability Framework | HolonIQ | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
The Higher Education Digital Capability framework identifies four core dimensions along the learner lifecycle: Demand & Discovery (DD), Learning Design (LD), Learner Experience (LX) and Work & Lifelong Learning (WL). Within these are sixteen capability groups or ‘domains’, with more than 70 capability blocks adding a further level of detail. Overall, the framework is designed to allow flexibility and interpretation in context; some institutions will find almost every capability block relevant to their organisational structure, activities and aspirations, whilst others will focus on a more specific set of capabilities applicable to their individual context.

An Easy Way to Search in Google Classroom | Free Technology for Teachers

An Easy Way to Search in Google Classroom | Free Technology for Teachers | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Twice this week I've had people ask me if there is a search function in Google Classroom. Unless, I've been overlooking something obvious, there isn't a native search function built into Google Classroom. What I have been telling people to do is use Control+F on Windows computers or Command+F on Mac computers to search within a Google Classroom stream or classwork section. It's not a perfect solution, but it's better than just scrolling through dozens of announcements or assignments to find the one that you want.

Five Free Tools That Help Students Format Bibliographies | Free Technology for Teachers | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

When I was in high school we had to learn how to create bibliographies by working from a template that my history teacher, Mr. Diggs, provided to us. When I went to college, I referred to that template and an early version of The Student Writer to make bibliographies. Today, students have a wealth of online tools that can help them properly structure citations and bibliographies. I've featured a handful of them over the last couple of years. Here they are.

Internet Archive Scholar - An Academic Version of the Internet Archive | Free Technology for Teachers | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

The Internet Archive warehouses all kinds of fantastic materials (and some not-so-fantastic) that can be useful to teachers and students. The trouble with it is the organization is a little clunky for research purposes. Even if you limit the scope of your search to webpages and text you can still spend a lot of time weeding out material that isn't academic in nature. That could be changing now that Internet Archive Scholar is on the horizon.

Quite a number of other people, in fact. I found three good long lists that already existed online, and I have put them here in a list of their own.

Mixkit Now Offers Free Sound Effects, Music, and Video Clips for Your Multimedia Projects | Free Technology for Teachers | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Back in February I published a video overview of how to use Mixkit to find free b-roll video and music to use in multimedia projects. This week the folks at Mixkit added sound effects to their library of free media. The sound effects library is separate from the music library in Mixkit. The sound effects library contains things like short clips of dogs barking, doorbell chimes, and car horns blaring. Just like with the other libraries in Mixkit, you can find sound effects by conducting a keyword search or by just browsing through the content tags.

Five Screencasting Tools Compared and Ranked - Fall 2020 | Free Technology for Teachers

Five Screencasting Tools Compared and Ranked - Fall 2020 | Free Technology for Teachers | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

The launch of Vimeo Record earlier this week made me think that perhaps it was time to write a comparison of popular screencasting / screen recording tools. For this comparison I selected the five options that pop into my head whenever I'm asked about screencasting (which has been almost daily since March). With the exception of Flipgrid all of the tools in this comparison have free and paid options. This comparison only addresses the features that are available to educators for free. If you'd like to see the comparisons in a chart format, I have embedded a chart at the end of this post (if you're reading this in email or RSS you'll need to click through to the website to see the chart).

The Craft of Writing Effectively: Essential Lessons from the Longtime Director of UChicago's Writing Program

The Craft of Writing Effectively: Essential Lessons from the Longtime Director of UChicago's Writing Program | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Academic writing has a bad reputation. “When a scholar’s vanity/insecurity leads him to write primarily to communicate and reinforce his own status as an Intellectual,” as David Foster Wallace diagnosed the problem nearly two decades ago, “his English is deformed by pleonasm and pretentious diction (whose function is to signal the writer’s erudition) and by opaque abstraction (whose function is to keep anybody from pinning the writer down to a definite assertion that can maybe be refuted or shown to be silly).” Indeed. But the disorders behind the kind of prose that inspires provocations like Philosophy and Literature‘s “Bad Writing Contest” are, if you believe University of Chicago Writing Programs director Larry McEnerney, even more basic than that.

Due to lockdown the majority of people  are spending most of their time interacting with the world of digitality.  Our screen time has exponentially increased  during the last two months. This is understandable given that the Internet becomes our only window on the world in a time where social distancing and physical restrictions have become the new 'norms'. However, with the amount of distractions present in the virtual world, it becomes extremely challenging to maintain sustained focus on a single task for a prolonged period of time  undermining thus our overall productivity and sense of creativity.
